Title: 1978 Ramcharger Aka The "Death Charger"
Post by: ProjectM880 on December 24, 2013, 11:55:19 PM
1978 Ramcharger - I finally got one , thanks to Noah and Troxell Automotive this project will be kicking off. He will be doing the Bulk of the work and I will come in to lend a hand and take the credit  ;D

The tub is pretty rusted. By Rusted I mean your foot goes through the floor boards. So We will be doing a Tub Swap.
The Plan is-
318
4 Spd
NP208
Dana 60 Front 4.10
Dana 60 Rear 4.10

More to come.................... As Noah does more work.......... I mean As I do more work......... I might supervise......... Mainly Drink Beer and Point at stuff  :D

:laughing4:  HEY - that's how I work on MY RC, too!

I'm old, and I have the money to do it.  I'm a WHEELMAN - make it ready to drive, and I'll do the rest!  :steeringwheel:

You too can have your RC build there!!! That is now the Location of Troxell Automotive! The Ramcharger is the first "Official" project to be started there. So Im the first official project customer.

And yes even best friends charge you a hourly rate to build your Ramcharger......... This one is going to cost me.... But it should be bad ass!!

So what are your plans: will it be topless?  Cage or no cage?

My mechanic does that. Man, if he didn't drink beer and just get after it.... Wait, that's me. Never mind. Good thing the owner is patient.  ;D Kinda hard to be mad at myself for work not getting done and drinkin' beer.

Man, it looked like the tub you started with was solid. Guess that was just the outside huh? At least you came up with a good one to throw on there. Can't beat that. In the long run that money spent on another tub actually saves money. Had to explain that to my wife but once the light bulb came on she totally understood.

Keep us updated....

I would like to Run a full cage on it, but until then im looking for a factory roll bar. Because I won;t run it topless until i have one. So I will run it with the top until I can find a roll bar or build a cage.

Nope, I have a decent 318 4 spd combination to go into it. I will probably save up and hopefully one day in the long future put a 4bt in it if the rc turns out nice.

The orginal tub was rotted. Flintstone floor pans , rotted rockers, rotted fenders, rotted top. The other body ended up having some shady crappy fiberglass work done to it so we ended up buying patch panels. But over all the other black tub was in better condition. But still not without needing repairs. This wont be a show truck or beauty queen by any means. Just a trail beater and occtioanl street pounder.

When i get back I will take some progress pictures and keep yall updated. If it ever warms up enough rust converter and paint will be applied. It will be painted Military Tan CARC.

Way to go. I have taken the 91 off the road and its now just a trail rig. Need to up grade axels. I have the truck in the back forty to get finished (89) big block truck, and the Chabby and the Zuke. Anyone need a project? I have too many. Not to mention my trailers......

Skip, I may need a trailer down the road a bit.

BTW wasn't there a funny story about Sam's trailer sometime back?

If your talking about Sam's Old trailer that Noah and I bought years ago then yes. WE bought it. I hauled it from Corpus to my ranch 3 and half hours with out a problem. Noah takes it 45 mins up the road and gets $300 in tickets.  :laughing4:

M880? No way to haul it. I don't own a trailer enough to load it up. But one day it will get going again.

The RC with hopefully be street legal also

I understand the trailer thing. I need to get my 20' redecked. Trying to sell or trade the 84 Chevy. Got a locked up rear for the Zuke. Putting a new battery in the RC and its good to go. And I still have the F-250 4x4 V-10. :steeringwheel:

Street legal would make a big difference.  I like the road trips in mine.  Get a lot of rubber neckers and thumbs up.  The Jeep is nice but I bet it feels good to get back into a Dodge.      :13::13:

They are the tires I will be running for a while. they are 36 by 12.50 Hummer tires. But they are on 8inch wide rims so they look skinny and are high in the center. I have some 8 lug 122 inch wide hurricane rims im going to use.

The Ramcharger, being the original CRO-MAGNON 4x4, makes it PERFECTLY suited to the "Flintstone braking system" that so many of us in the salty northeast have experienced!  :laughing7:

Man, sweet looking painted sand. Nice touch. Kinda torn on mine. Haven't decided (when the time comes) to either go with close to original paint scheme (except mine would be root beer metallic, tan, root beer metallic) straight gloss black or,,,,,, straight OD green. In some aspects building military would be cool and less expensive in some areas (interior especially) BUT, bumpers, fuel can holders, rifle mounts,,, that can get pricey. (yes, mil rifles mounts. If you're going to do it, DO IT RIGHT. ;D)

Ordered some more parts.
Zero Rate Blocks with 3* Taper. This will allow me to move the front axle forward and the rear axle back. Once I get back We will make some more progress. Noah Is working on it when he can. Wireing is a big project so he defently has his hands full. Lance Is working on the top getting rid of the rust and prepping it for paint. Lots more to do. Still need to measure for driveshafts which noah has spent alot of time doing. This will be are first rig to order custom driveshafts and yokes for. So we want to get it right.

If noah has anymore updates or pictures I will post them .

Yours has a 6" lift you said but does Noah's Power Wagon have a lift?

Just curious because depending on who you ask, some people say that I will need custom driveshafts with a 4 " lift.  The kit I bought came with a 2* shim and a 2" angled block.  Looks to be 2* also.

Yup im running 6 inchs of lift plus i plant to change it a bit for alot more flex.

Noah's PW has between 2-4 inchs of lift. Closer to 2-3inchs they were used springs so we have no clue what they were orgianly rated.
You don;t need a custom driveshaft for 4inchs lift unless you have some super flexy suspension. You can easily grind the tabs on the CV and lengthing the driveshaft. Lenthging a drive shaft isn;t very expensive. But You don;t always have too. It all depends how much your suspension moves. I ran 4 inch lift on my M880 with  stock driveshaftes. Didn't have a problem until the straps came loose and the drive shaft acted like a pogo stick under neigth the truck.

Well, considering I TEST DROVE my first Ramcharger from a dealer in 1987... and it took TWENTY years after that to GET the truck... then sitting 6 years, and now another 18 mos. in shops... yeah - I guess I am getting a LITTLE antsy!!!!   :confused2:

I've put all of 50 miles on it, since it passed inspection a year ago.  And now that I have the perfomance ECU, I gotta drive all the old CHEAP gas out of it, and refill it with PREMIUM... so I should TRIPLE my miles on it right away, whenever I finally get it back!!!  :dontknow:

have you ever thought about running dual electric fans? i got some on my truck and like them. i got 96-00 dodge caravan fans and they work great at cooling my truck once it has hit operating temp. they also almost look fairly good when installed. also keeps your truck fairly quiet.

A LOTTA Jeep guys like the electric fans.  With a small, but decent stereo, and a BIG CB rig, I'd just as soon keep the rest of the electric stuff to a minimum, until I get a dual battery setup worked out.  With headers & Magnaflow glasspacks, I'll NEVER hear my fan clutch anyways!  :tongue3:   I was curious about the flex-a-lites, because I don't know too many folks who have run 'em on BIG trucks like ours.

Since Noah brought up the subject of clutch fans.  I was wondering about the idea of running a spacer instead of a clutch on a trail rig.  I figure less chance of the clutch failing and causing the fan to hit the radiator.  I picked up a 7 blade factory fan from a D250.  Figure the clutch is to stop robbing power at highway speeds where the air flow would keep the radiator cool anyway.  Any thoughts on this?

i don't think you would need dual batteries to run any of that. your truck should probably have a 90 or 120 amp alternator so you should be fine. you also don't drive you rig often so you may not notice the clutch fan. i know when i first fire up my ramcharger i am pretty sure the mechanical fan makes my ramcharger sound like there is a supercharger under the hood.

Ive never liked eletric fans for trail rigs. I would much rather have a mechanical one that has a less chance of failing. Ive seen to many that fail on the trail. they work great on the high way and street but can't keep up on slow moving trails.

For a strickly trail truck a fixed mounted fan is just fine. Especailly if your running a stock"ish" Motor. You probably would't see any power difference.
Ive run both fixed fans and clutch. I like both. The only down side to a clutch style is when it wears out it doesn;t push enough air. where as  a fixed style never wears out.

In my experience even a slightly worn out clutch style fan will still draw enough air through the radiator to keep most engines cool. However, if you have a new big block motor (sixgun) a new fan clutch and a properly fitted fan shroud are a must in order to keep heat in check during break in.

On flex fans/solid fans: they are noisy. they are fragile (flex), they are robbing precious power after about 2500RPM- I for one like to run as high as 5000+ RPM to satisfy my need for speed and outrun stodgy old blue jeeps, and worn out tan Ram Chargers  :headbang:

On electric fans: They are probably the best choice assuming certain prerequisites have been met. 1st: they need to mount securely  (no zip ties through the radiator) 2nd: they need to be wired correctly and have an alternator that puts out at least 70-100 amps in order to keep the battery up- no need for dual batteries just adequate charging capability (especially at lower RPM when crawling) 3rd: worn out junk yard fans are not a good choice for a trail rig. Yes they worked in the driveway, but is that POS gonna kick the bucket on a trail when it is about 110 degrees out- probably  :laughing4: --Bring a spare or buy new !

I went to a 125 amp alternator, and while there aren't a LOT of electrical gizmos even in a '92, I'm hoping that'll be enough to drive everything.  My Commander has a 165 amp alternator, and I DON'T have the entertainment center, or rearview camera/stereo!

Yep you should be just fine. Get a good battery and run a 6 guage cable from the alternator and make sure you have got real good grounds from battery to motor, motor to cab, motor to frame etc

What is Lance running, a 360?  Does he have a build on here? I didn't see anything labeled Keystone Lance.

I think that Ernest will build a Mopar vicariously through me.  :laughing7:  The RC he got rid of had a 400 motor.

Noah's truck surprised me when I found out it was a 318.  It sounds and runs like a HP motor.  I had a 71 Charger with a 318 waaaaaay back when.  It had a 2bbl and the old Thrush tin can mufflers and an econo dual exhaust.  Surprised many street thugs.
Shitty picture of a picture but here it is behind the 72 Camaro.

ya. i would not trust those cheap fans that use zip ties to hold them to the rad. the dual electric fan setup i am using pretty much bolts on in place of the stock fan shroud with a few pieces of angle iron. used electric fans may be a gamble but they are usually better than most of the cheap stuff that stores sell new

Ernest swears by his electric fan.  However, his crappy wiring of relays is what leaves him on the trail, pouring all the drinking water into the radiator.

My little yeller truck now has 160 w H-4 bulbs in the headlights, a HD radio, a bunch of cameras and a dash mounted monitor.  I do have a second battery though, to keep pulling you other guys up the hill.

We won't mentioned who had to be pulled last time I went out...

The Front is from Ruff Stuff. The rear is from Ballistic Fabrication. I selected that they didn't weld the skull on but that's how I got it. Its a little bigger then the  Ruff stuff cover and hold a little more oil.

Dave hadn't mentioned it in a while, but he brought up plasma cutting that hangdown on MY bumper off, last time I was there.  GREAT as it would be for a Mad Max style road battle, it's gonna SUCK on a downhill slope hitting a boulder.  So he's gonna plasma cut it off, and I'll still be able to mount the winch behind it!  :13:

Well realise Richard when you see "my Progess" Its really Noah and Lance's Progress. Im off shore right now. Noah just sends me picture updates when im out here. Plus know has a kickass shop with plenty of the right tools to do the job, so that helps progress alot.

On the hard brake lines on the front, I actually bought a bender and and lines from Oriellys and bent them my self. Not too hard. I would reccomend doing them if yours are crappy. Just takes some patience.  But if yours are still good then reuse them.

I do but I don;t if that makes since.  I gave them to Noah for his 79 RC plans to restore. I plan to just run plexiglass . the top is really really really rusted up. Big holes in it. So It wil just be a offroad top until I find a better one or a soft top.

The interior came in. So the plan is to get that installed next week.

Lots of things to do to get it going.

Should be interesting to see if it holds together on the trail at Hidden Falls!!!

Well its running and stopping now. Still have a bunch to do but it no longer requires a tractor to move around. the brakes work great and for a 318 this thing has a little pep to its step.  {cool}

Got to get this  thing done because next weekend we are heading to Hidden Falls ORV Park!

In Texas everything is hot all the time. The black Vinyl was for the floor. The seats are nasty old cloth. I need some 80's RC seats with the bigger backs for this thing.

The paint is Military CARC Tan. Its bad-ass paint that requires HAZMAT shipping haha

I've looked at that full-floor vinyl matting; maybe it's because the top half of my truck is grey, but if I was going that route (and I would like to!), I would GO with the grey for that very reason.  Shows less dirt, and should be cooler!

Don't know how prevalent RC seats are down there, but I seem to see a LOT of that era seats on Craigslist & fleabay (the only part of the truck that didn't rust up here!  :laughing7: ).  THAT said, I'd LOVE to pull some late model leather seats out of a Dodge truck and put those in MY truck!

Well Since we are deciding on a date for a fall meet, that means I need to get my butt in gear on the RC.

Noah and I have plans to tackle the rear suspension when I get back in from work. One thing we know for sure is this thing will need shocks and limiting straps. I'm hoping to get away with the drive shafts I have now, So I can wait to do those when I do the Doubler. Since Mean Green Has the perfect NP435 NP203 combo Its perfect setup to mount a doubler ! All in do time. First time to get ready for RAMCHARGER.NET Fall Meet!

Come to think of it, I need to do Windows also!......... and maybe brake lights......... Noah!! Noah!!! We Need Brake Lights!! And be sure to stock up on the Good Synthetic Blinker Fluid! Only the best for this RC

Looks like you might be doing some fender trimming before long. Lol

I never noticed them before but are those rear shock mounts homemade? If not, where did you get those from?  You mentioned that the front driveshaft would fall out sometimes. How did you solve that?

Yeah, there will be lots of trimming in the rear fenders!

Noah got those shock mounts off of Amazon some where. I can't remember what the company name is.

Im going to use a limiting strap on the front axle to save the drive shaft until I do another longer front drive shaft.

Lunch Box Lockers are ratchet style lockers and can be noisy in a rear axle. Most put them up front. They don;t make very good rear lockers. I would personally save up for a good rear locker if you plan to drive on the street. Noah and I both run Spartan Lunch Box lockers in the front axles of our trucks. They very rarely come un locked
Title: Re: 1978 Ramcharger ( Getting Closer)
Post by: SixGun on October 09, 2014, 08:10:42 AM
I think the issue is street or trail truck.  Practical on the trail may not be practical on the street even if it is street "legal".  From what I have read, all lockers will have mannerisms that some will find annoying in the street.  Occasional tire chirping and a little tire wear are a given but once you get used to it and learn to take wider turns it is nearly unnoticeable. As for lunchbox or more traditional locker the weakness is in the axles themselves more times than not.  A hard hit or a stuck tire can find a weak spot without a doubt. Also a high performance vs stock motor.

I think that for a trail truck, if the welded rear holds, keep it and go for it. My only concern was if it should have been welded around the spider gear housing as well.  Time will tell if you give it a chance.  Will has a welded rear if I remember correctly. Maybe he can give us some input.

Post by: rjtx667 on October 09, 2014, 09:31:53 AM
I think the welded locker will be fine... Noah just mentioned concerns of how it will do in ice/snow... which is about the only other time I really drive the truck on the street.

Hopefully the RC will be good to go at hidden falls. Noah and I worked out a few hiccups last I was there and got it running pretty good. Still have a few things to do on it. Need to do some trimming to the fenders if Noah hasn't got to it. Plus Might even change up the interior a little bit if I have the time when I get back.

I dont think anyone makes a 30 spline dana 60 "lunchbox" style locker they are all 35 spline I think...good for a front d60 axle. They are also very nearly the same cost as a grizzly/detroit style locker. I am not sure if the spider gears will come out of your current carrier anyway as they have to be "rotated" out of the carrier....yours ain't gonna do that anymore  :violent1:........ I recommend a detroit and some 35 spline shafts when the time comes....maybe some disc brakes too..... oh and dont forget a front d60 that will also need some love..... then you will need bigger tires....and more lift.....and another tcase....and a supercharger.....and a new motor(408).....hmmmm too much coffee  :035:

Noah your a Bad influence on people... or are you the voice of reason.....

new tcase? what's wrong with my tcase?

and I think the 35's I now have are big enough lol

sadly those are the only 2 things I can argue with on that big list... well maybe the supercharger lol

tcase will get replaced when I break it  :evil6:

tires are stuck at 35" until I have more lift and they are bald  :confused2:

The rear locker and 35 spline shafts... thats about 2k (guessing) that gets to wait as well.. the next priority will prob be a d60 front and crossover steering... at some point.

I don't recall saying that.. I was told by many to just run what I got until it broke... and I did.  :headband:

I need a few years out of these upgrades so I can save up $$ for the next round of upgrades. I don't figure the chances are good for that but I can hope.

Well the Death Charger ( As Noah calls it) Has a new clutch. Its a Hays street strip clutch, so it defiantly grabs. Defiantly different to drive for sure. Richard got to ride around a little bit and see how poorly I drive a stick shift with a new clutch. I never realized how much that old clutch slipped until Noah and I installed the new one! Should be nice on the trail.

I couldn't believe how loud it was. At HF it seemed to be the quietest rig. So used to seeing him creeping slowly around the park. Tell you what, that sucker is tall. I'm 6 foot and is was tough to get in and out of. Especially holding my ice tea. Lol Banged my arm pretty bad on the striker bolt. Still bruised a week later. And I was worried about hitting my head on the roll cage.

Sorry about that Richard, I'm 6'2 and its a pain for me to get in and out of, especially with out a tilt column. The funny thing though, I thought Laura would have a problem getting in and out of it at HF, But damn she jumps in there a graceful as a cat!

The RC is rather loud, Noah and I have discussed extending the exhaust tips out to the back of the truck. Dumping right underneigth really makes it too loud and kick up to much dust.

But you think Mine is loud with a stock 318 with manifolds, Wait till you get your 77 RC with the 383 Big Block Going  :headbang:

Noah just needs to let you know when one of his neighbors sells their property and that way his shop is nearby.  By that time his shop will be twice as big. That carport on 2 sides really extended the work area since the last time Ryan and I were there. It will probably have a cement slab by the next we go out. :sign0098:

IT could be, try turn the key all the way back, then all the way forward a few times. I had the same problem with the W200.
Also while starting, Sometimes you can ease the key back as it still is cranking and it will catch.

Might have to put a "push button" ignition on it.

Exhaust pipes running through the inside of the truck does not constitute a heater. :tongue3:

A little Update on the ole Death Charger,

It now has the rear glass and hatch installed........ Some what permanently  :tongue3:

Also Noah and I got the idea to use Ball Valves to control the Heater under the hood. He hooked it all up and damn does it work good. A little too good. But perfect for a cold day. Now if I can only get AC...  :017:

Noah has layed down the gauntlet with his new gear set up. So in order to slowly catch up he got me to order some 35 Spline rear Dana 70 Shafts for a future gear install.

Thanks to Richard ( Gave me a Discount% Code) and Ryan ( sent me a link to a winch on sale) I have a winch on the way.

Now I just need to get Noah to wire it.

Because If I do it will most likely ..  :violent5:

so what did it run ya? brand?  i went tonight to help a friend out that sunk his tractor after all this rain, then he got his 2005 dodge 4 door 4x4 down trying to get to the tractor.  My old ramcharger got to em easily, but that OLD winch even doubled wouldn't do anything....  We ended up using the hi-lift & stuffing logs under the tires.... then used the hi-lift as a come-along & got the truck out that way...  So, looks like that is my next upgrade....

I've used the 20% off coupon before when its the sale price in the store.  If its a coupon sale, they won't let you double coupons.  I have seen the price drop on occasion.  If the price is $349 and you use a 20% coupon, it is actually cheaper than $299.

I don't know how much fun the M880 would be to pull on a bumper pull. I think that rates a bigger trailer still!
