Title: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on August 13, 2012, 10:59:42 PM
i thought i would start a thread about my 81 since i have done so much to it and i figured some of you might be interested in some in some of the mods.
here is what it looked like when i first got it. for the most part it looked fairly good but it had it fair share of rust and pealing paint. someone had painted it and done a not so good job.
under the hood sat a 318 out of a 85 with the intake off a 77 with a 650 Holley double pumper. it also had an accel coil and wires but the coil was very flaky. would never run right so i replaced it with a stock one and never had a problem to date. i ended up being given a 570 street avenger that i installed and am still running.
i spent many hours sandblasting and and doing metal work with my dad to get it on the road. it required 2 front cab mounts and a bit of cab support. otherwise it was not too bad. had to do some basics like replace almost every brake line, 1 caliper, 1 rotor, the pads on one side. it looks like someone had installed all brand new brake parts on the one side but forgot to bleed the caliper so there was no wear at all. just a bit of rust. i also had to shorten some park brake struts off a newer dodge to fit the rear brakes. for some reason those where missing. put brand new tires and a center link on it and it was ready to drive about a month before my birthday and 1 day before i would loose a 10% discount on insurance.

well after i had it on the road for a bit i started cleaning up under the hood so i sand blasted the valve covers and painted them mopar blue.
painted and installed they look good but i was a bit unhappy with how the new paint made everything else not look so good.
so i spend another day sandblasting and painting the exhaust manifold. the only thing that sucks is that the cheap paint i used did not even last a year but it did look good for a short time. next time i will spend some extra money on the good paint. also would you believe my exhaust manifolds had no gasket when i took them off? put them back on the exact same way and didn't leak a single bit. i also took some video footage of it running with the exhaust manifold off.

not too long after i ended up picking up electric fans and a power distribution center out of a 2000 dodge caravan for $40 and the guy even took them out for me and gave me plenty of wire on the PDC to hook it up.
more fuses and relays than i think i will need but having extra can not hurt.
heres what the fan looks like installed. fits the rad pretty good width wise but is a bit short height wise but it pulls air through the top which is what gets the hottest.
just used a tiny bit of angle iron to hold it to where the fan shroud should have been.
heres the power distribution center kind of installed. currently the only thing i have hooked up to it is the starte and electric fans. i am planing on hooking other things like the headlights and everything else but have not got around to it yet.
if you have any questions just ask. i will try to answer them the best i can.

I might use that PDC idea on the trucks , should clean up the wiring too 8)

on every forum i join eventually putting headlights on relays pops up. now depending on how you decide to wire it you may end up using 2-3 relays by the time your done. this could bring you to 3-6 relays bolted to your fender and in my opinion the fender would start looking a bit crowded with that many relays. with the PDC it hides it in a almost stock looking box. plus it kind of gives you a bit of room to upgrade in the future. i think i could probably put my wipers on relays but i am not sure of that.

Post by: Dodgestrike on August 14, 2012, 01:19:36 AM
yeah I have the headlights on relays , plus one for the pusbutton on the shitfer another for the switch that cuts the power out of the pushbutton ,plus another for the trans cooler fan , and I think I'm going to add a few others for other stuff, so its a good solution you gave me. plus I think I can hide it under the dash or somewhere and clean the engine bay up ;D

It sounds good but is there a thread out there or article I can read that shows details on converting the wiring into these?
Title: Re: my 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on August 14, 2012, 12:05:35 PM
i don't think there is any very detailed articles out there because not all distribution power are the exact same. you would most likely have to be pretty good with a digital multi meter. i know i have access to lot of diagrams but i ended up going through with my digital multi meter to find what i need. now if you do find one out of a 95 or older caravan they looked very simple to wires because you can see where all the wires go. the newer ones go to connectors and then run around inside the box.

My big concern is your pic where all the wiring is all converging on the power distribution box. Looks worse than what I have - no offense. Is that the final product?
Title: Re: my 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on August 14, 2012, 02:07:09 PM
that is not the final product. i just have not had a chance to finish wiring. having 2 vehicle in the driveway to work on can slow down certain projects. the repairs to my ramcharger really slowed down any work to my 81.

Like anything I think you can put it wherever you want and route the wiring as you see fit , I've tought of using a relay board from the aftermarket but this seems like a cheaper option and I like cheaper , ;D

Cheaper is good but needs to look good too. LOL Sounds good in theory though.

mine only cost me a whole $10 and it came with all the fuses and relays.

if the weather co-operates with me i might try finishing up some of my the wiring and get some new pictures of it cleaned up.

the weather seemed to co-operate and i manage to get some work done.

i am glad i got around to it today because i don't know if the dimmer switch plug would have lasted too much longer. the one terminal looked like it had seen a lot of heat.

i also managed to remove this wiring while i at it.

after about a year and half i finally decided to change the air filter. the guy at the parts store had a bit of difficult time cross referencing the part number off the old filter. eventually he got it sorted out and found me the larger filter like i wanted. i ended up having to turn the lid upside down make the larger filter fit but i think it looks good.

been a long time since i did much upgrading on my 81. since the weather is starting to get a bit warmer i was finally able to put my backup lights on relays and install a couple extra lights under the bed. haven't really got to test them that much since it started raining but even the stock lights appear to be brighter. might have to do up a DIY one day. i think it is almost as important as putting your headlights on relays.

thanks. i am just glad it is starting to warm up. that snow really slows work down to the bear essentials. i know i was suppose to change the oil at 215,000km on the ramcharger and now there is about 218,500km on it. the 81 is also due for a oil change very soon. just might have to wait a week or 2 until mother nature decides we have had enough snow and ice up here.

i wish. the power had gone out, the satellite was covered in ice and my 81 was on empty so i didn't really have enough gas to keep it charging the battery while i use my inverter to run the basics. just had to get out of the house. sitting in a empty, dark, quiet house by yourself sucks.

better make it $400 worth :sunny:. my sister just payed me the $100 that my brother-in-law has owed me since last summer. my budget for parts seems to be getting a bit larger. now hopefully the other people that owe me money will pay me back soon and i will have another $200 to spend on my truck.

brake lights.

backup lights on. you can't even see the red from the brake lights with how bright the backup lights get from just putting them on relays. i know i use to use brake light to assist the backup lights but no need now.

well i think might be doing a bit of an upgrade tomorrow. been talking with PnishrPW over on dodge talk and i learned that denso alternator should bolt on in place of a 65amp alternator with about no modification. just have to adjust the lengths of the of the hollow tube spacer things on the pivoting bolt and shim the alternator to line up perfectly. should be no problem. only thing that sucks is i will only be upgrading to a 75amp denso that came off my 91 but i guess it will have to be a stepping stone to the denso 136amp alternator that i would eventually like to get. hopefully i will see about another 5 amps at idle. could really use them when i got the truck in reverse. really thinking about removing the 2 100w backup lights that are hiding under the bed and replacing them with the 55w ones i have. i can see just as much with the 55w lights as i can with the 100w lights.

also if you are looking for any 70's dodge ram parts you could try contacting PnishrPW on dodge talk he use to have a lot of NOS. don't know exactly what he has left but i think he may have a fair bit left.

well i thought things were going pretty good until after i got the 75 amp alternator installed. i think it must have a bad bearing. the thing got as hot as my heater hoses in the maybe 5 minutes it was running and it seemed to whine a lot when put under load and you revved the engine. almost sound a bit like a supercharger. did seem to keep my voltage gauge steady. no fluttering around a bit when idling. so i guess i may be stuck with the 65amp alternator for a bit longer. think the 65 amp alternator may need to be rebuilt though. there seemed to be something about the way it would spin when i had it off that didn't seem right to me. i think whatever i was feeling may also be related to the voltage gauge fluttering.

now i did get around to swapping backup lights. i didn't quite like the look of the new lights and how you couldn't really adjust them but they seem to work good and put light where you would want it when backing up.

One trick I learned on magnum engines.. the like 96 and newer have a smaller alternator pulley... put that on and it spins faster and makes more power.

Post by: crazzywolfie on May 28, 2013, 12:19:57 PM
i wish i could get a smaller pulley but i think i am stuck using what i got. don't know if they make smaller v-belt pulleys. i know i don't want to downgrade to serpentine belts. i will definitely have to remember this for later. i think i could use a bit extra power for the ramcharger when idling.

downgrade? I don't see s belts as a downgrade
Title: Re: my 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on May 28, 2013, 06:42:58 PM
can't beat the reliability of a v belt. they almost last forever. s belts tend to stretch or the tension gets weak and you loose your belt and them belts are not very cheap. v belts at least tell you when they are getting loose and you can't beet the tensioner.

my new $67 stereo installed. for how cheap it was it sounds pretty good. works a lot better than the old one. the tach would sometimes cause the old stereo to make funny noises that would go up and down with engine rpm on certain radio stations. i even think this new stereo get better reception on most channels. just have to modify my subwoofer box to make more room for the amp. just have to hope the 65 amp alternator will put up with the abuse. only going to be running one 150 watt subwoofer.

well so far the alternator has not had an issue powering the amp but then again i am no like most people who has the bass cranked up high. still haven't got the amp bolted down yet. it still just sits behind the seat loose.

so far it has been a pretty good week. scored a 390cfm holley for $50. bought a rebuilt battery for $57. then sold the 650cfm double pumper carb that was on the 81 when i bought for $150. i have also spent a bit of time under the hood cleaning things up. electrical looks a lot better. it is amazing what a bit of split loom and electrical tape will do.

Hey Mat, it looks like you need to get some more loom. Get the big diameter loom for the larger bundles. Consider using some thin black zip ties from a hardware store instead of electrical tape. Make sure to do the single wires as well with some thin loom. Seems wasteful but really improves the look.

Okay so now you have the before picture. Post up the after pic when your done. Good start LOL :)

well i think i still have about 20ft of 3/4" loom. it was on sale when i was at princess auto the other day. i don't think i am going to go too crazy with the stuff. i just wanted to clean up the wires by the rad support. they look so messy when they were sitting loose. thanks for the zip tie idea. that would look much nicer than electric tape.

the before picture is in post 1 or 11. this is more so the after picture.

thanks. i really need to take the valve covers off again to give them some fresh paint. i also really want to make the intake look better but to do that i really need to take it off but my dad say he has a 340 high rise intake manifold sitting in his cuboard. i really need to pull it out and check the numbers and take a look at it. may just be better to clean it and put it on but first i really need to build a sand blasting cabinet so i can clean things without wasting so much sand.

got my exhaust manifolds painted and i'm pretty happy with the way things are turning out so far.

i also figure since i am cleaning up under the hood i might as well go after cleaning and painting the engine a bit so these pictures can serve as before pictures.

been kind of busy working on my ram over the last couple of day when the weather would allow and it is starting to pay off.
replace some old fuel line. about 1/2 the old fuel line was pretty rotten looking and i think it might have been allowing air to be sucked in somewhere.
after pressure washing. i built some exhaust port covers to cover the exhaust ports when i pressure washed things.

then after a bit of paint.
i also started bolting the manifolds back on so i could fire it up and kind of bake the paint on a tiny bit. it would also allow me to back the truck up without being too loud :laughing7:. hoping to get the y pipe back on followed by the rest of the exhaust so that i can drive it :steeringwheel:

lol. thanks. i was pretty impatient and didn't want to swap plugs with some garbage ones. i plan on getting some new plugs soon anyway so i didn't worry about it too much. i just want to get the truck up and running again.

ya. the truck still runs pretty good with the painted plugs but i got a small exhaust leak somewhere because i was impatient. you can't hear the leak when i am idling but you can hear it when i stomp on the gas.

i also got some video footage of it after i got the y-pipe re-installed. i can't lie. it sounds good but i do kind of like it silent.

i been doing a bit of work on my 81 in the last bit. seem to have got some issues sorted out. i think the 390cfm holley carb was fine but i was having issues with the base plate gasket. i used a different base plate gasket when i re installed it and so far so good. seems to be running pretty good but still need to find tune it. also installed the 100 amp alternator finally but still having a bit of an issue there. not sure if i am having an issue with the alternator itself or things are just not line up properly. i know i should have 2 belts on it but can only get 1 belt on it because the power steering belt is the next one over. i think i also got to shim the alternator a bit more to get the pulley to line up. i get the occasional belt slippage when cold. also installed and hooked up a electric fan controller so that my fans turn on and off automatically. they kick on at 210*F and kick off less than a minute later when things hit 200*F.

now onto my newest project got a overhead console out of a 96 jeep grand Cherokee. not quite sure how i am going to make things work. seems like i might have to take the body control module out of the jeep to make the overhead console to work. the only thing on the overhead console that works with out the BCM is the compass and lights which means no temp. the temp sensor hooks up to the BCM and that hooks up to the overhead console. if i had to buy all these parts at a junkyard i wouldn't even attempt to make this work but i am luckily getting the parts for free from my brother in laws friend. my BIL does work for his friend occasionally and worked it out so that i can take whatever parts i want off of it before he sends it to the scrap yard. plan on taking a lot of the interchangeable parts like alternator, ignition switch/locks, throttle body and maybe a few other miscellaneous things. been kind of eyeing up the leather back seat. might work good in the ramcharger.

That should be fun! I saw an RC once, where someone had taken the LONG overhead console out of a Dodge Caravan, and wired it into their roof. Would LOVE to do that with mine, since my wife has an '08 Caravan STX, with the overhead console with all the goodies (I wonder is she'd MISS it? Hmmmmmm! :tongue3: ).

DO post findings and results... while I keep thinking about stealing appropriating my wife's console... :icon_scratch:

lol. i think trying to use one out of a newer caravan would be very hard just because of how high tech they are.

would this be the overhead console picture you saw that was installed in a ramcharger? if so i used one out of a 93 jeep Cherokee but i have heard one out of a caravan would fit better. it is just difficult to find parts for older vehicles.

i lucked out and picked up the overhead console out of a 93 jeep for $20 that someone was parting out a jeep. i have almost been wanting to install a flip down dvd player or tv. just not sure. i just like having a console that tells me how cold it is outside and the extra lights because the stock light sucked. it would be nice if my ramcharger was not magnetized so that the compass would work but you can't have everything.

i will try. for some reason i don't think this will be something a lot of people would want to try just because of how complicated the wiring will probably be because the console is out of a 96. the console that i installed in my 93 had few more wires but was simpler.

You fabricate it and do all the trial and error. Then when you eliminate all the bugs, let everyone know how to wire it up correctly the first time.
Title: Re: my 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on December 27, 2013, 08:42:28 PM
lol. i am truly hoping i can just find another overhead console out of a older jeep or something just to make the electrical end of things simpler. wiring up one of the older overhead consoles is pretty easy. you usually have your constant power wire, ground, ignition power and door jamb switch wire that turns the lights on. the console i got out of my 93 had 2 wires for the temp sensor where the console out of the 96 don't. the temp sensor connects to the body control module which connects to the overhead console through the CCD wires. i will also have to build some type of overhead console to hold the console just because of how tall the console is.

Cool thread. Never considered put any lights on relays but now.......

I got a Taurus v6 fan for mine. That covers quite a bit of the radiator too. Going to put that in and wire it up soon.

Thanks. from now on i plan in using relays anywhere i can.

Not a big fan of ford fans because the pull a lot of power on startup and usually require the heavy duty expensive ford relaybthat is rated for 70amps or something like that. dodge ones seem to usually not pull as much power and cool things just fine. i also like the dual fan setup so that i am not forced to rely on just one fan

swapped carbs once again and now running in to even more issue. it seems something is wrong with the accelerator pump squirter on the 670 that i just re-installed. broke a fuel rail o-ring on the 390's carb. not having a whole lot of luck. driving a truck with a non functioning accelerator circuit sucks.

Title: Re: my 81 ram

no money to go TBI. it would cost more to go TBI than it would cost to buy a new carb. i changed carb yet again. put the 390 back on after i kind of re positioned the o-ring on it. i think it still leaks but not as bad as it was. it is better than trying to drive with a bad accelerator pump.
Title: Re: my 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on January 13, 2014, 06:22:17 PM
well i kind of redneck fixed the 390 holley after i noticed the o-ring leaking again. used a leftover piece from the last rebuild kit that i ordered for it. so far it seems to be working and think it will last longer than the o-ring and will not break as easily. since things seemed to be working so good i decided to crush some ice.

well i seemed to have discovered what has been causing me so much of a headache over the last 6 or so months. it appears my issue has most likely been with the fuel pump all this time. it just took me 6 months to figure it out. installed a used carter high flow fuel pump and so far so good. i still need to do a bit of tuning but i seem to be able to get around without the truck stalling and my idle seems to hold a steady vacuum at 22in-hg just like it use to before i started having these issues.

still haven't got to do too much to my truck as far as modifications go. i did have to mess with my camber a bit after i discovered my 1 tire had some bad camber issues. i also axed the 96 jeep overhead console this weekend after i found a caravan overhead console. for anyone that is interested the 93 jeep overhead console follows the roof way better than the caravan overhead console. obviously with some work it could be made to work in a ramcharger but i plan on using this in my truck so it is really not that big of an issue. got to chop and modify it anyway because it is too long for my truck. i also started swapping it to LED. only thing that sucks is i can't remember what i did with all my LED's so i may have to order more or wait and hope i find the one's i have. onto pictures

as long as it is not a grand cherokee you should be able to make it work. silly grand Cherokee's are way more complicated and impossible to use without way more work than it is worth. also don't forget to grab the ambient temp sensor. on a 97 jeep it should be on the radiator support cross member behind the bumper.

thanks. i went all led in my ramcharger a long time ago but with my truck it has been tricky because of the silly 1004 bulb. i don't think you can get led replacements for them plus i really wanted the overhead console and having the lights where they would be more convenient. there must be a reason all the new trucks have the lights up over the mirror area instead.

i got mine out of a dumpster near work. they were brand new still in packaging but my local walmart sells some similar lights at way more than i would spend on lights. you could probably buy some green led strips or RGB strips that would do the same job. i was just using stuff that i had sitting around.

ok cool I'm current;y using green led strips inside the truck. going to run some behind the grill and I'm thinking 2 strips at each end of the truck then 4 strips down the side tat way it will be really bright and no dark spots at all but I'm also thinking about using the RGD strips so I can turn it white to work as rock lights.

cool. i really want to put RGB lights throughout my truck. then you could change the way your truck looks. if you have ever played with some RGB led lights and the dimmers for them you could get some unique color. i got some that i plan on mounting in my box but i got some rust the i would like to tackle before i install them.

well i finally found my ambient temp sensor for the the overhead console so i got to test it out. for the most part things seem to work good. the only issue i have been finding is that the computer don't seem to have much of a memory and keeps resetting to *F after you turn it off and the compass don't seem to do anything at all :dontknow:. i guess i will just have to keep my eyes open for another one but for the time being i can still modify the console to make it fit so that in the future i just have to swap out the computer part in the console.
here is a pic of it working

Nothing like a good set of led lights. Im no longer buying cheap china leds the are dark and burn out fast compaired to cree leds... burned out 6 china leds in 3 months and i hate changing bulds right after putting them in. Im even looking at going led headlight bulbs in my wifes durango.

I like the console as well... you might have to look up drawings to make sure the composs is part of the computer not another wired in item. As far as the memory no hoding it mught have an acc (constant hot) power wire for memory like the stereo does. Once again the wiring diagram would help.

the ones i used were cheap Chinese ones. so far i have not had an issue with the overhead led lights in the 2 years i have been running them in my ramcharger. i have had a few led dash light quit working but it seems fine now.

the compass is built into it. there is this transformer looking thing inside the computer. it has the constant power like it should or else the lights would not work. i think there might maybe be something wrong with the computer or it might just have something to do with it being a pre 93 overhead console.

well i keep changing my mind with the overhead console. since my brother in law is scrapping his van i grab the overhead console out of it. so far it looks like it might fit. it seems to work properly so i will have to see how it looks in place

nearly 2 months later i finally get around to fixing the hole in my rad. the major reason for me was i developed another even worse leak so i had no choice but to pull the rad. i was able to solder up the really bad leak but because of where the small leak was i was not able to get solder to sit on the hole so i ended up just covering it with 2 part epoxy which seems to have done the job. since i had the rad out anyway i decided to clean it up and toss some paint on it. the job is not perfect but it looks a lot better than it did with the flaking/missing paint.

about damn time i did some work on my truck. replaced both motor mounts on my 81. what a huge difference it made. the one motor mount that i knew was bad even looked like it was collapsed when under weight and fell apart when i went to remove it. should have taken care of this a long time ago. it just sucks that i had put less than 20,000km's on the set of motor mounts that i just replaced 3 or 4 year ago and the one already failed.

made in taiwan but i think that is pretty much the same thing lol. the new ones seem like they should last longer. they are not no $200 motor mounts but i would be happy if they last longer and don't fail like the old one. at least these ones were only $12 each which is not too bad. that is a lot cheaper than the $50 each that the local parts store wants for the exact same parts.

was suppose to pick up patio stones tomorrow but my BIL decide to do it tonight instead since it is suppose to rain tomorrow. 23 patios stone at 80lbs each. only 1840lbs. my truck did pretty good and squat was minimal. i think my bumper only dropped about 4" or so when fully loaded.

well the weather has been getting decent out lately so finally got to do some wrenching on it. had to patch up the rad again. got another leak. i think i got it patched up but need to take it outside and pressure test it with some water to be sure. 1 day i might have to get a new rad but i will probably just keep patching this 1 for now. hard to justify $200+ on a rad for a vehicle that you only put about 1000miles/year on.

Ahhh....but would you drive it more if you were comfortable that it was dependable?

I'm torn myself. I want to get get rid of my "newer" daily driver with its associated costs of full insurance coverage and car payment. However, i have come to love my little hatchback. Its like a little truck with great mileage and comfortable with a very nice sound system. These extra costs though could go into the 4x4 build.

i don't drive it less because it is less dependable. it is actually really reliable. just most of the time i only drive it around town. it and the ramcharger get about the same fuel mileage around town so it makes more sense to drive the truck when i can. save the ramcharger to do all the highway driving since it can get 14+mpg on the highway easily. i actually really like driving the truck. it rides pretty nice, has a good stereo and suits my personality a bit more than the ramcharger. 1 day i might turn it back into my daily driver but it might be fuel injected by then. when the ramcharger dies it will be donating its engine/trans and many other parts to my 81.

been driving my truck around a lot since Thursday and so far so good. i did get a bit worried a few times when the engine would hit about 200*f but then the thermostat would open and temp would drop . just have to toss the electric fans back on and it will be ready to run the streets this summer :13:.

Are you using the 195* tstat?
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on April 04, 2015, 07:31:57 PM
to tell the truth i can't remember. i am almost certain i got a 185* in it since i got the electric fans but then again i might have swapped it last fall for a 195* since i was driving the truck last winter. either way i need to get the electric fans back in just to be safe.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: SixGun on April 04, 2015, 08:29:00 PM
On the V6, I ran a 180* tstat and it ran very well and stayed cool.

I heard that some of the sensors need the 195* to operate properly. The 318 is running a 195* now. The only issue is on the highway above 70 mph, it gradually climbs in temp. Nothing dangerous but it is noticeable. I wonder if what I read is true? I am considering going back to a 180*. With speed limits as high as 85 mph, it would be nice to take advantage without worry.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on April 04, 2015, 09:35:47 PM
since my truck is carburated i don't have to worry about a computer complaining about the engine being too cold for too long. when i bought the truck it actually had a 160* thermostat.

the only time i notice much of a temp increase on my temp gauge is when i would drive up Caledon mountain. usually the temp gauge stays pretty steady while driving most of the time otherwise even when i was doing 85mph on the highways that allow it. i think a 180* thermostat might be ok in your truck. i think i have read that they mainly use the 195* thermostat to help keep emissions output down.

I think your right about the emissions. I don't think I'll swap it out till I have to go into the motor or drain the coolant for any reason.

ya i hope i don't have to drain the coolant in my truck any time too soon. i have got too much practice draining the rad on this truck. the coolant in this truck is always a nice shade of green tho.

At least you had to drain it, mine would drain itself and i had to stop to fill it up with water more often than gas. Thankfully thats been taken care of.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on April 06, 2015, 08:19:31 AM
well if i didn't drain it the rad would have drained itself all over the driveway since the most recent leak was very close to the bottom and i had just topped up the rad.

only bad thing about lower degree tstats is your heater is not as good. Thats my issue in the 2000 ramcharger, the heater stinks because the water is not hot enough.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on April 06, 2015, 09:54:05 AM
that is what i like about the electric cooling fans on the rad. i can still let my truck hit 200* by just letting it idle. last winter before my fan controller died i actually had the fans setup to only kick on if the engine hit 220* or something like that so my truck would get nice and warm.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: rjtx667 on April 06, 2015, 10:04:37 AM
that works great sitting still, but going down the road at 70 mph it cools itself off pretty quick... or at least my 408 does. Even pulling a load the fans won't hardly come on unless I am in stop and go traffic or the A/C is on.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on April 06, 2015, 10:11:53 AM
as long as you got the coolant up to temp once in a while the heater shouldn't stink tho. i understand the fans rarely coming on. mine are pretty much the same way. they rarely come on or are needed.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: rjtx667 on April 06, 2015, 11:40:06 AM
if you can get the truck to warm up past 180 the heater gets warm, but when you start driving it cools back off.

Also realize I am running a cummins radiator in it, so it takes a lot to heat it up :laughing7:
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on April 06, 2015, 12:50:51 PM
even at 180 i find the heater core pretty hot. i think a 180 would be ok even up here in the winter but then again i think i spent the first winter driving my 81 with a 160* thermostat in it. it was a really cold winter driving the truck.

ya a cummins radiator might definitely keep your engine real cool all the time

well not been doing to much to my truck lately. i did find the 180* thermostat in my tool box when i cleaned it out so i must have a 195 in it so all is good. suppose to have new universal joints showing up for it soon. would be real nice to get rid of the shake i got and i think it is universal joints. it seems to kind of come and go a bit sometimes. was temped to try putting some used universal joint in it but hoping the new ones show up tomorrow. i know i should be taking it easy on the universal joints that are in it right now but i did have some fun today. got to drag a chevy frame out at the storage place in town so that my dad could load cut it up for scrap. had to give it a few tugs to get it out of the spot it was in without getting myself stuck but my truck did good. this frame and most of the other parts trucks there have been there a long time and sunk into the ground a good bit. i might try getting some pics when i go back tomorrow to see about picking up more part. i almost wish i could have kept the truck. the thing is a monster. they got channel bolted to the frame from about behind the front tire to about the front of the rear tire and the cab mounts bolted to that. it also has a 360 4bbl with a standard transmission. this thing would almost be like a tank. it also has the gas tank behind the seat and there was one under the bed. i am taking the one under the bed for my 81 maybe. just need to get the 1 bracket out for that. only 1 bolt left holding that in. got to cut the last one out.

i also attached some pics of the truck i was taking parts off of. i have never seen a truck built quite like this truck was. they got the frame real beefed up

been a busy day working on my 81. my original plan was to just clean and paint the new y-pipe, install it and be done. once i took the old cracked y-pipe off i decided to remove the exhaust manifolds and clean and paint those while i was at it. while i was waiting for paint to dry i decided to upgrade to the newer smaller starter. i thought all of this would go super smooth but apparently not. the transmission inspection cover got bent a tiny bit when i changed starters so it made the most annoying ticking sound. had to pull it out and fix it after i tried changing the starter about 4-5 times trying to figure out what the ticking was. all good now :great:. also looking pretty good. next up on my list is the valve cover. going to paint up the spares that i have and then swap them on. the valve covers are starting to leak pretty good once again. then hopefully i can clean and paint the engine once again and make it look good.

so any transmission guys around? i got a bit of a question. i got what is left of the 89 d150 in my driveway. it has a TBI 318 with what i am pretty sure is a A500. the truck looked extremely mint. i think it only had about 40,000 miles on it just because of how clean everything is. the only thing is the transmission fluid is pretty black and i think i remember it smelling a bit burnt. the truck looked like it had been mudded which i am guessing might have possibly cause the transmission to burn up a bit but would it have caused any major damage to anything? i almost want to try the transmission out in my truck if i can get the right drive shaft. i did drive the truck onto the trailer and into my driveway but the truck barely ran most likely due to lack of gas so never got a real feel for it. it seemed to move pretty good but the trans never got warm when i had to move it. would maybe fresh fluid and some new filters save it? i was also possibly thinking about installing an external filter if i do the swap just to catch all the particles. would this be a good idea? i wouldn't mind installing a overdrive transmission in my truck especially since i got this one sitting here but i really don't want to spend a whole lot of money really doing the swap. there is nothing really wrong with my 727 that is in my 81. just my 81 has been my daily driver lately and the better fuel mileage would definitely help until i decide exactly what i am doing. i know it wouldn't work the greatest with my gear/tire size combo(3.23/ 235 75r15) but it would definitely get me closer to being able to cruise the highway at about 1500RPM instead of the 2000-2500 that i currently do with the 727. i was thinking about possibly running larger rear tires but the grimmjeeper gear calculator said that i would almost have to go with 33's to bring the rpm down to where i want which would look stupid in the back.

Post by: ProjectPW on June 24, 2015, 08:32:46 AM
If the that transmission worked in forward and reverse I would say it is worth a shot to swap it in. Drop the pan first and make sure it isn't full of mud or debris from internal parts failing. If it looks good just install a new filter and install in your RC. The driveshaft from the truck can be shortened for the RC also. You may have to use the kickdown linkage from your current setup as the tbi stuff may not work. I recommend using ATF+4 fluid, and if everything works out replace the filter again after 500 miles.

Post by: crazzywolfie on June 24, 2015, 08:58:13 AM
thanks. i was actually thinking about installing it into my 81. the transmission in my ramcharger is just fine and one day i plan on swapping the 318/46RH out of it into my 81 but i am just not sure if i am done fixing it yet or not. i was just hoping on finding the correct length drive shaft for the job instead of cutting mine just in case the transmission possibly takes a dump. it sucks that we sold the driveshaft that was in the 89d150 but $250 for the drive shaft and trans cross member was too good of a price to pass up.

If you asked Noah real nice, he might still have the driveshaft out of the 85 longbed I have. It would not be an exact fit, but give you something to chop on.

You would just need to measure and see what size you need. Granted who knows what shipping on that would cost.

thanks for the offer but i might know a couple local guys who might have one. i am really hoping i can possibly just find one that will require no cutting or shortening. i just don't like having to deal with the 1 guy because he really don't always know his parts like he should especially since he mainly parts out dodge trucks. he can also be all over the place with his prices sometime. it can make dealing with him difficult but he is the more likely person to have it. he is advertising that he has 2 1990 318/transmissions for sale so there is a good chance he will have one but i think he has been advertising the same engines/transmission for sale for a while. who knows

I don't what prices are like there but it may be cheaper to get one shortened or lengthened. I've heard that it can from $60-$80 and balanced to boot. My concern would be the dirty torque converter. Maybe an tc exchange place since it will be stock. Do you have a tach installed? It seems to me that 2500-2800 rpm is the optimal power band on my tbi 318. I get worried at 3000 or higher since it starts to creep in temp and get terrible mileage.
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram

I had one shortened years ago at a local Welding shop. $45 then. I have since done my own, easy to shorten one....
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on June 25, 2015, 02:00:53 PM
i have no clue what it would cost to have one shortened. i know my friend Collin had to have his replaced and i think it cost him $400-$500 to have the tube on his replace at the drive shaft shop near him after he bent it. i am hoping i can possibly find the correct length drive shaft that i need or all else fails buy one that is about the same as the stock one and see about getting it cut. i just don't want to cut the one i got just in case i need to put the 727 back in.

ya i got a tach in my truck. usually when running the highway i run about 2000-2500RPM depending on what speed i decide to do. if i keep at the speed limit and run 2000RPM i probably get better fuel mileage but i don't know if it would be that huge of a difference. the ramcharger with overdrive and lockup torque converter averages about 2-4mpg better than my 81 ever does. i have just been watching the tach in my friends caravan lately and it usually stays about 1400-2000RPM on the highway which is about where i think my truck would do fairly good. i was even possibly thinking i could always play around with overdrive and lockup torque converter to see about getting it to run where it would still have lots of power when i need it.

as far as the dirty torque converter goes. i don't know if i would want to spend too much money on this trans unless i really plan on keeping it. i figure a fluid/filter change and an external in line filter would most likely clean most of the crap out. i would really like to swap the 46rh/318 magnum out of my ramcharger into my 81 eventually but not sure when that is going to happen.

i think i might have possibly found a temporary solution to all my problems. just hope it is not sold yet. this guy live down the street from my sister. i know i have seen the truck up close and it looked pretty good but i never thoroughly checked it out tho. it would definitely make for a good daily driver in the fuel mileage department but if it rides anything like Collins truck i may need better seats in it

i was hoping to go that route but i might be a bit late. i stop by the guys place yesterday and he said he might have it sold. i can check back in a couple days to see if he still has it but considering what he is asking i would guess it is most likely sold. still might look at the other ramcharger. i might borrow my sisters car to drive down there with my dad to check it out. my dad is never afraid to really low ball people so i might get a good deal on it. i don't really want the plow so hopefully i can save some money if they keep that.

ah crap. after emailing with the guy that owns the ramcharger i don't know if i would want it for the $2000 he is asking and it don't seem like he will budge on price. i asked if it has ever had any work done to the engine/trans/front axle and he said the only thing that has been done was the coil was replaced which would scare me. with nearly 172k miles on it if it has had no work done to the engine/trans or front axle it would most likely be a money pit. i guess i might just got to keep fixing and driving what i got for now until i find something i really want.

so has anyone ever seen a dual alternator setup on one of these things? i started playing with it and i think i might be able to stick one where the a/c compressor would normally be. the only thing i possibly see maybe being a issue is the upper rad hose. i don't think there would be a ton of room between it and the alternator if i put it there. i think i just have to cut and weld the bracket a bit to make it work.

Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram
Post by: crazzywolfie on July 05, 2015, 09:44:02 PM
i just don't see if being worth it. i currently got one of those big 115 amp alternators on it and it really don't seem to be strong enough all the time to power everything. i don't see a extra 25 amps being that much of an improvement especially at idle. that is kind of why i would like the dual alternators. then even if i ran dual 90 amp alternators which might be the most common size found on the these i should have at least 90 amps at idle and as high as 180 amp running down the road and i could always even upgrade in the future if i needed to. i know i got 1 90 amp alternator for sure. i am not sure what size the one on the parts engine is but it looks like it was new so i will use it. i am also using the engine to mock things up a bit to see about getting to work and see what i might run into issues with.

haven't got to work on my dual alternator setup yet since i been so busy working but i did get the newer rad aluminum style rad installed yesterday and it is working so much better. the truck is definitely staying a lot cooler than it was. i thought i might have had a defective thermostat there for a bit but with the new rad it looks good so far.

i don't know what brand it was. i just pulled it off the parts truck in my driveway. it looks like it was just an aftermarket stock replacement with plastic end caps and steel frames like the factory rad on my 93. it wasn't the typical brass/copper rad that should have been on the truck. i do like it a lot more than the old rad tho. i just need to modify my electric fan bracket or maybe even build a completely new setup. i got a set of electric fans out of a 2003 caravan that look like they would fit pretty nice if i trimmed them a bit.

getting real tempted to buy a brand new vehicle to use as my daily driver. took me a bit longer than i should have to notice this morning but eventually i noticed that my bottom rad hose had slipped off. i ended up driving home from where i was with no coolant. the engine was sounding a bit like a diesel before i topped up the rad with water but seems to be sounding a lot better now. i am hoping i didn't do any major damage but i guess only time will tell. the vacuum gauge reading is still still about the same as it was before. i am planning on doing a compression test and maybe a leak down test to see what shape the engine is in

the compression test came back looking great. 170-180psi across all cylinders with about a 20psi increase when i added oil to each cylinder. that sounds fairly healthy to me. would really like to do a leak down test on it to see if there is any other leaks but it might wait for now.

well i wasn't planning on doing anything for the truck today but i have started sand blasting the steering brace i got for it and since i did that i also threw the shackle mounts through. just working on painting them now. yesterday i was cleaning and painting the steering box off the parts truck. i am hoping it don't leak but if it does i am hoping it leaks less than mine. i tried getting the lock ring off it to replace the input shaft seal and it didn't want to move so i may just leave it. i think the one on mine might come apart but then again it leaks enough oil that it had better come apart like the front end did. my truck will also be getting a ton of other TLC soon. got all need coolant/transmission fluid/oil and filters for it. also got an external transmission filter for it. need to figure out exactly where i am going to mount it so it is easy to change and within reason of the return line. lot of work ahead tho.

thanks. been trying to make some changes in my life for the better and fixing stuff on my truck sooner is one of the things is on the list. i got a crap load of part just sitting around waiting to go on my truck. just really need to get it done. i have been meaning to change the ATF in this truck for 3+ years. i have had the filter waiting just never did it.

been busy working today. got the new power steering box in and so far it is working pretty and not leaking. the only thing that sucks is i think the steering is a bit sloppier now. it definitely don't feel the exact same as it was before. did also run into a few small issue but nothing i couldn't overcome. i was originally planning on just using the old power steering pump that was on it and just installing new hoses but i couldn't get the old hose off it so i ended up swapping in the spare pump that i had sitting around from my 91.

your rag joint looks like it needs to be rebuilt :dontknow:

its not fun but its doable... does not last for long either.

that was my attempt at rebuilding it. those things are not easy to get back together. i might have been better off to leave it alone but the stock rubber was torn and the grease looked very brown. i also used the best of all the pieces i had between the coupler rebuild kit and used parts to get the tightest fit i could. most of the parts i put back in were the original ones since they looked better than the aftermarket one. really need to see about getting a universal joint or something for it because i really don't see myself spending the $250-$300 on one of those Borgeson shafts would cost me by the time it would get to me.

i know amazon is the cheapest but by the time you add shipping, taxes and the exchange rate it is about $250-$300 Canadian.

ya. the exchange rate is the real killer. that is kind of why i am hoping to go the redneck way. i think i have read that some jeeps use a universal joint that could be used and jeeps are a dime a dozen so it should most likely be easy to find what i want cheap.

how about 25$ and a sawzall :headbang:

i think that is the right size.. I dont remember if the steering box is 32 spline or 36.. regardless they are both available cheap on ebay.. just cut the old one off and reattach the new. I would recommend welding it to your stock shaft

I'm sure you have an alternative for a slip joint also.

no slip needed... we used this method on Keystone... I believe the later columns actually have some slip built into the column

i don't think it would be hard to make a slip joint if needed but since there is not one in the shaft stock. i am pretty sure i have read that the steering columns have a slip joint but they are only there more so for if you get in an accident and even then there is really not that much slip in them. it may be on the list of stuff to do eventually

well i have been doing lots of driving in the truck lately and finally actually checked the fuel mileage for the first time in forever and was getting a surprising 14.3MPG. not great but was a lot better than the 9 or so MPG i thought i was getting. i think i should have probably got a lot better mileage with the way i have been driving the truck to work and back but apparently not. i am thinking about trying to tune up the holley that is on there or swap it out for the 390cfm holley i got sitting around and see about tuning it just right. i almost swear i remember the truck use to have more power but i could be wrong. i have messed with so much since then so who knows

That is pretty dang good MPG... my 86 bone stock 2wd RC is lucky if it gets 12.5-13

well i just figure since i spent 2 days straight doing the speed limit dead on and using Mexican overdrive occasionally i should have got better fuel mileage than i did. it is the same fuel mileage i use to get when i would daily drive it. i just thought it use to have more power and less hesitation than it currently does but i could be wrong. maybe i am just getting a bit pickier as the years go by.

I think i used to averaged 13-14 with my 92 and 93 ram chargers with MPFI... so yeah I would not complain about that at all.

Heck my 2003 durango only gets 14.5 in town, granted some of that is my heavy foot. :headbang:

i think if i drove my 93 like i have been driving my truck lately it might actually see 18-20mpg. my 93 can average 14-16mpg most of the time without me trying. usually i do have a heavy foot also but been trying to keep it under control to save some money on fuel especially since i had to work 4 days in a row. my commute is about 60 miles a day. could almost us a car or something like that but with how many people have been killed on the highway i take to work over the last couple years i don't think i would want to drive anything less than a full size vehicle on it. i also received and installed the auto meter vacuum gauge i wanted for a while. it helps to remind me to take it easy. i still need to figure out the best place to mount but i made it usable for now. running out of space for aftermarket gauges.

so does anyone know which transmission line is the return line? i am planing on changing the transmission fluid/filter and adding an external transmission filter. also does anyone have an external transmission filter installed? if so where to do you got it mounted? i am having a bit of a hard time choosing a spot to put it where it would be reasonably easy to get at when it needs to be changed but up and out of the way.

best way to find which line is which is to disconnect them and have a helper crank the engine briefly to determine which one is pumping.... I don't recommend inline filters but if you do run one change it VERY frequently as a restriction of any kind on the cooler return will KILL your tranny :nono:
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram

i don't think it would cause any restriction. i even think the filters have a bypass in them or if not the replacement filter they recommend does have one for sure.

just saying in my experience external filters are unnecessary... get a drain plug in the transmission pan and service it frequently... drop the pan and change the filter every 30k... atf +4 or other high quality synthetic lubricant.. a transmission cooler is a great idea also :great:
Title: Re: crazzywolfie's 81 ram

i was just thinking with an external filter it would keep the transmission fluid cleaner longer and keep the transmission work longer. i also figure it would act a bit like a cooler. i really don't want to add a additional cooler. i find the stock one usually does the job pretty good. i always find the bottom of my rad way cooler than the top which i know should be good.

According to these threads, the front line is the pressure and the rear line is the return.

thanks. if that is the case it might work out a bit better for me since there is a couple joint in the line that heads to the rear line. i just need to figure out the best spot to mount it first. i am also hopping to possibly get a bit deeper pan off a stock a518 trans. Collin is getting that B&M pan for his truck installed and i am hoping i might end up with his old stock one if the shop doesn't throw it out.

Additional coolers are really only necessary when towing or in other severe duty use situations (4 wheeling)...just remember that the inline filters are intended to be replaced very often... I would not leave one on for more than 10k miles before changing it... make sure it is properly mounted away from exhaust heat and use new rubber hose where ever you attach it

i rarely tow anything heavy and never 4x4. also i think i could live with changing it every 10k miles. i am usually lucky if i put 3000miles on the truck in a year. i will be getting some new hose once i figure out where i am mounting it. i am pretty sure it should stay fairly far away from the exhaust if i can mount it on the drivers side of the frame

still not having the greatest luck with this thing. some of the lifter in my engine are started to tick under load. not sure what to do about it or if it is anything to worry about. it gets a bit better once warmed up but still noticeable. not sure exactly what i am going to do about it. i was thinking about throwing a bit of ATF in with the oil and hope it helps. i am going to change the oil in it and hope it helps since i haven't actually change it in forever but i have been keeping it topped up which is nearly as good as changing it. i think i go through about a quart or 2 a month daily driving it so oil should be fairly clean.

now i did pick up another horn for my truck. scored it for a great deal of $5. i am glad it popped up because i really needed a new horn. the stock type horns were either dying or just sounded weak and like crap.

i haven't added ATF to the oil yet but i did get around to changing the oil last week and the lifter tick is still there. i think the lifter tick gets a bit better some times than it does others. sometimes it would disappear all together and most of the time it only ticks under load. now tick or no tick the engine seems to be running pretty good otherwise. i cleaned out the back of it to help someone do some moving and been having some fun. the tires squeal and spin a lot more with absolutely nothing in the box :13:

but the don't squeal in mud. i almost think the truck would be able to do a burnout with nothing in the back of it. took it accross the scales and with just me in it, it only weighed a whole 4100lbs and the truck could probably loose a few more lbs if i clean it out.

so anyone know much about building dump beds? after doing some of the work i was last week i have been thinking about making a drop in dump insert for my truck. anyone possibly got any tips? i though about going the lazy and cheap way but that would only get me about 10* of slope when dumping which is really not great so i figure i need some sort of scissor setup to get a bit more slope. i have googled it a bit and looked at enough pictures of them that i think i know what i need to built and how to build it but any tips or tricks are welcome. since i have never built something quite like this before it will be a learning experience. i might even see about building a test setup out of wood to make sure the angle will work before building the frames out of metal. i think it would definitely be pretty cool if i could get it to work.

got to love breaking old parts. going to attempt to make my own throttle cable for this thing. the old one finally snapped the other day. lucky for me i was only around the corner from home so i was able to idle it home with a bit of a bump to the idle speed. it looks like the end might have just popped off but the hard to say with how frayed the end was. other than that the cable looks mint. i thought i had another one from when i carbed my 91 but as of right now it is nowhere to be found. i may end up ordering a new cable eventually but it would be nice if the cable i make works. i have been watching video's on youtube on how to add ends to cables and it looks pretty easy to me. i guess we will see. trying to save as much money as i can until i get a new job.

I had a 71 Charger way back when that had a throttle cable get jammed at WOT. Wild ride home standing on the brake for a couple of miles.

i don't think that will happen. for me i see the worst case scenario as the end coming off the cable again and me being stuck without throttle again. i am pretty sure i will come accross my other throttle cable eventually. i have been trying to clean up lately so i am bound to come accross it eventually.

so far my home made throttle cable has been doing the job good and i have been beating on it quite a bit lately. almost wish i had a LSD so that i would be leaving more than 1 line at a time at the bottom of the street lol.

now that summer is around been driving my truck more and have been having a few more issues. there is something funky going on with the charging system lately. i think it is either a bad voltage regulator or a bad ground. either way it is annoying. it will sometimes charge properly or sometimes run at about 16 or more volts. i even had all 3 of my radio fuses pop yesterday. not sure if it was related or no but it is a pretty good coincident.

also been vehicle shopping lately and i got to say it is hard to find a solid first gen. i was looking at a ramcharger this morning and it was in better shape than mine in some ways but worse in others. it even had a factory bench seat which i personally though was a cool option but not cool enough for me to pay what he was asking. i might have found a decent short bed that looks solid but there is no ownership for it and it needs a bit of work but is a solid truck especially for what he is asking. i am going to try and look into getting an ownership for it or at least find out who legally owns it and see if they would be willing to get me a new ownership for it. my dad is going to get a new car package for it on Monday which should give us the trucks history and tell us who owns it. also while looking at the ramcharger this morning we went and checked out a local auto recycler and i came across some new dodge floor mats for my 81. they don't match the ones in my 93 but for $5 i wasn't going to turn them down they clean up nice. i also got another dodge and ford ones for another $5. i gave the ford one to my dad since i know he needed it plus i figure i owed hims something for dragging him to check a rusted out ramcharger with me.

well i figure i would share. finally decided to spend some serious money my my truck and bought fuel injection for it. other than the inline fuel pump that came with it crapping out less than 3 days after install and a bit of hesitation here and there it seems like it is running pretty good. definitely a lot nicer to run on the highways than it was with the carb. there is still sometimes a bit of hesitation off the line but for the most part it does pretty good. definitely seems like it might be better on fuel since the upgrade but hard to tell with how short i have had the system and really not sure how accurate the temporary fuel gauge is. got to wait til i get the new in tank pumps before i can start getting a real idea what type of fuel mileage i am getting. definitely not going to waste my time messing with a inline pump ever again. good thing i am learning this on my truck. would have sucked if i bought this for the elcamino and had such issues. would have also saved a bit of money if i ordered the kit without the pump and everything. oh well live and learn.

will do. definitely better and more convenient for around town and on the highway since it can adjust the AFR depending on load and TPS. still doesn't quite have the performance that well tuned carb has when you stomp on the gas but i almost wonder if that is because the computer just hasn't learned what to do yet. there is definitely a few things that are not self tuning. the 4x4 is already TBI so no point spending money on fuel injection for a vehicle that already has it.
