Seeing as how it started THIS week, 100 years ago, it seems meet, right, and salutary, that we mark this anniversary, as ONLY we can, here at RC.net...  :tongue3:

General Discussion / Anybody run a CB in their RC?
July 23, 2014, 12:19:24 AM
I realize the Smokey & the Bandit days are long gone, and the younger set can't REMEMBER a time without cell phones, but how 'bout us OLD timers - anyone else run a big CB rig in their RC?

I run a cb & a scanner in both my Jeep - and after tomorrow - my RC.  I'm active also over at CBradioforum.com, since getting back into four wheeling.  Can't IMAGINE wheeling WITHOUT a cb... but then, I'm an old-timer, too.

UN-like my Commander - full of modern avionics and little spare room - our RC's & Gen.1 Dodges lend themselves very nicely to cb installs - putting one in mine has proven a snap... save for a mis-calculation on my jumper length.  My custom 4' jumper arrives tomorrow, so I can complete that install.  UN-like you TX boys though, we got a little thing here called, "oak trees," which are gonna play HAVOC on my 102" steel whip.  :-\   I have a gutter mount tie-down for it, but I'm even worried about ON-roading it with that (since it's mounted high on the multi-carrier).

Thing is, I ran a 102" steel whip on my old Bronco 25+ years ago down in NC - another state noted for a proliferation of oak trees - and it did fine... until the day of Hurricane Hugo.  I followed my dad to work, since I had the day off (NATURALLY, when you ask your boss for a day off - a month & a half in ADVANCE - a Category 4 hurricane blows ashore that day  :o ), and a low-hanging powerline in Cleveland, NC (outside the Freightliner plant on U.S. 70W) ATE it.  Ran a 3' firestik thereafter, just as I do now on the Commander.  With all the NATURALLY low-hanging and ancient powerlines in Pittsburgh, I'll either electrocute myself, or short out the entire city, running around fully-deployed here:o   But if I lived in the land of scrub pines & diamondbacks, I'd probably not even mess with the gutter mount!  8)

I know there's always 38 USB for reaching out, but anyone wanna "claim" a RC.net channel for shooting skip?  My cb handle is the same as my handle here, and I talked to west Texas in my Commander in the afternoon in Buffalo last fall (being RIGHT beside Lake Erie at the moment probably helped...  :tongue3: ).  I'm sure with some good propagation, we could all shoot the breeze some night on the "RC channel."  8)

Parts for Sale / Rear driveshaft & pinions - '92 RC
July 14, 2014, 02:46:53 PM
HAVE for sale, a professionally reconditioned RC driveshaft off my '92.  Reconditioned last year, it has less than 200 miles on it.  Comes with BOTH pinions (front & rear) and has U-joints installed, although you'll WANT to replace them.  Straps, bolts, and nuts included, and I have a brand new pinion seal for the FRONT (goes in the transfer case).

$75 for ALL - shipping by UPS on YOUR dime.  I'll get some pics up either tonight or tomorrow!

HOW tough is it?  Does the axle need some disassembly & reassembly required?  :dontknow:

Ok... HOW does one access the run/accessory switch, since the ^%&%$#^@@%$^$& stereo run/ignition wire is what's prevent my amp from firing up, and it's REALLY starting to piss me off!!!  :angry5: :angry5: :angry5: :angry5: :angry5:

I know about the Trox screws, but the LAST thing I wanna do is break something IMPORTANT... or set off the airbag::)   My stereo install is complete, save for this one *&^*&^%&$%$#$^@%#!#$$%@$@^@&*%^$&%$#^$^@#$#$!@#!^@&#*%#$&$%$#$@#$@!@!!@# wire, and hooking it up correctly.

Thanks...  :confused2:

After 8 years, and a COUPLE of false starts, I'm about to FINALLY get my stereo installation done!

Who else has done one, and what have you got?  Post lots of pics if you can, so we can see what's what and get some ideas.

I'm going without a subwoofer at the present (I know - practically UN-heard of in these days, but news/talk stations always sounds weird through one...  :o ), although my Kenwood stereo supports one.  I might fiddle with it later, so I wouldn't mind seeing what y'all have done on your installations.  Because of other interior goodies, I'm a bit cramped for space, which is why I'm especially keen on seeing what HAS been done in other folks' installs.

Vehicle Help / 33's vs. 35/36's
June 25, 2014, 07:27:48 AM
Because I'm starting to worry about how much load my wheels will be bearing before too long (winch still needs installing, more gear to load out, skids, trusses, rock rails & sliders yet to be added, etc.), and because I'd prefer holding off on front & rear Dana 60's for the time being... I'm debating dropping back to a 33" tire on 15x8 aluminum wheels (as opposed to my 15x10 steel wheels currently.

I've already noticed a little tire rub up front - presumably from a full-lock turn or some such.  I know 33's will fix that, and probably give me all the wheel travel I need - unless I decide to do a Walker Evans in it and take flight (flying's EASY - landings are the hard part!  :confused2: )!

What would be the benefits vs. the tradeoffs of moving DOWN in wheel & tire size, for those in the know?  Thanks!

General Discussion / WALL-rated!
June 23, 2014, 09:33:24 AM
Leave it to the Israelis, to build a worthy successor to the Ramcharger!  Gotta dump that Chebby engine for a Cummins, but OTHER than that...  8)

CombatGuard armored vehicle can climb walls

QuoteThis truck isn't just trail rated, its wall rated.

Israeli Military Industries has introduced its newest extreme armored vehicle: the CombatGuard.

According to Defense Update, the hulking 4x4 rides on 54-inch tires, has 2.3 feet of ground clearance, can ford over 5 feet of water and, with wheels positioned beyond the ends of the body of the vehicle, has approach and departure angles of 90 degrees, essentially allowing it to drive up a small vertical wall.
Powered by a 300 hp version of the General Motors 6.5-liter diesel engine used in the AM General Humvee, the CombatGuard has a top speed of 93 mph, carries up to 3300 pounds of payload, and can climb a 70 percent gradient.

A modular design allows for several configurations, and the vehicle can be outfitted to accommodate as many as eight troops, or six with a turret gun on the roof. But the coolest feature may be its clamshell-style rear passenger doors, which bring function with their action movie form. The bottom half does double duty as a staircase offering easy access to the high cab for heavily equipped troops.
No word on when, where or if the CombatGuard will be deployed, but it made its public debut this week at the Eurosatory convention in Paris, the world's largest exhibition of defense and security vehicles.

Its even got a promo video!

Why, oh WHY, does the Haynes Manual on '74 - '93 Full-Size Dodge Trucks, NOT include a diagram of the NP241 transfer case?!?!  ::)

Oh well - some buddies from Steeltown Offroaders are gonna speed up my driveshaft project - we just need to know a couple of things.

1) What SIZE is the flange nut that attaches the yoke to the transfer case?  Is it standard, or metric?

2) What's the proper inch/lbs of torque to cinch my new flange replacement back onto the t-case?  After the meeting, we were kicking tires in the parking lot, and guessing 150-180 in./lbs, but we'd prefer NOT to "guess" - we'd like to get it RIGHT.

3) Does the pinion seal need to/HAVE TO be replaced at this time, since the yoke is coming off?  Is that an "Autoshack" purchase, or a special order item?

Thanks guys!

Cars and Trucks for Sale / CLEAN PA machine! '85 RC
June 05, 2014, 08:12:20 AM
Can't say as I've EVER seen an unmolested PA RC this old, and still in this good of shape!!!  :o

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/4501359728.html

That's a rural area, near the state line.  I suspect they do NOT salt the roads there - certainly not like they do here in the city - which may be why it's so well-preserved.
