General Discussion / New winching event for idiots...
September 10, 2013, 11:10:15 PM
So, tonight Ernest a fellow worker and myself set out to set a submersible pump in a pond.  (It was my project.)

The pump weighs 110#, the pallet it was sitting on and all the protection to keep fish and leaves and whatever out weighed at least another 60#.  It has a 4" hose that with fittings and all would weigh another 40# or so.

I set up the Willy Replica on the pond dam, pulled the winch rope all the way out, tied a rope to the back of the pallet and we were ready.  We backed the trailer with the pump on it into the edge of the water and proceeded to pull it into the pond with the winch.  Drew and Ernest were feeding out the discharge hose and the electrical line and the rope to pull it back out if we have to do maintenance.

Only problem was that we pulled it out so fast that the air did not get a chance to exit the protection and the pump and the stupid thing floated.  At least it floated until it turned upside down.  I ended up swimming (wading) in to right the device and we eventually got it hooked up and on the bottom of the pond.

It was about 5 minutes after that when I got the emergency call to go pick up the grand-daughter and take her and the horse to her riding lesson.  I had no dry clothes.  I will not do this again. :lol_hitting:

I won't even mention Ernest getting into the canoe and trying to upright the device.  He drives the canoe a lot like Dave drives the Jeep.  I will shortly send a pic...

Other Outings / big holes
July 10, 2013, 07:16:26 AM
Nick's dad (Iola, Texas) sold a bunch of dirt to the state for widening of a state highway.  Ernest, my son and I went out Sunday to make fools of ourselves.  The holes were too deep, the sand was too soft and it had rained there a few days ago.  Ernest promptly pulled into a 25 ft deep hole and found the bottom too soft to go across.

After a winching exercise we managed to get me stuck in a pond.  They took pictures of that but all were busy while we drug Ernest out.

At least we didn't break anything.

Ernest did have to spend at least 30 minutes trying to get the mud out of the right front wheel so the truck would go over 30 down the highway.

Vehicle Help / No fire to plugs
June 19, 2013, 10:29:36 PM
1988 Cherokee, 4.0 engine, auto tranny.
Has 12 volts to module and coil.
Has 5 volts +/- to distributor
Has voltage fluctuation with cranking at distributor
coil has right resistance
pulled ECU (pain in rear) and replaced with another used one
no change in problem
Test instructions from internet (which never lies) says to check continuity between module and terminal C16 on the ECU.  I cannot figure out how to find terminal C16.
I'm to the point that I think it is a harness issue and plan to install a new wire directly from the ECU to the module if I can figure where to start.

We do not have the diagnostic plug for the jeep and I can't figure out how to read the codes from the check engine light until I get a new bulb installed.

I need this jeep running again so I can get my Caliber back from my daughter...

Wanted or Trades / Need a locker or gears
May 10, 2013, 08:53:39 PM
I really had visions of getting the RC I got from Nick ready for RJ.  Plan was to put the .392 geared axles from the red truck under the RC, tune up the magnum 360 and come with two trucks.

HOWEVER, we parked the axles at the storage facility that Ernest and I use, on top of his trailer.  Someone liked the rear axle better than I did cause it came up missing.

Why would anyone steal a Dodge axle?  How could they know that it had 392 gears, an extra spring and a good limited slip in it?

I can put the front axle under the RC but I can't fork out the cash for new gears in the back and a locker or limited slip too.

Anyone got a limited slip or a locker for a 82 Dodge 9.25 axle?  Anyone got .390 gears for the same?

Here's my grand-daughter.  Had to put the truck on hold to go and watch this.

I discovered this vehicle today.  It is not listed in CL or anywhere else.  I can be bought if anyone is interested.

I did not confirm the year model, but I was told by an employee of the owner that is a 1950 model truck.  It has a bare bones 440 with blue paint on the engine.  I was told that it has a 727 tranny but I did not actually look at the tranny.  It has a rear diff with a removable third member.

It is owned by a shop that builds custom golf carts and I was told that the owner traded something for the truck but has not touched it in months and would sell it.  The owner was not at the shop and I have not talked to him.

If you click on the link below the pic you can get a higher quality pic but it will probably be sideways.  I can't figure out how to cure that.

Following is what I posted on RCC a few minutes ago:

I'm not seeing much interest here so I want to stir some up.  Several of us are heading to Hidden Falls on April 26 -28.

I plan on testing out the new stuff on my project and I'm pretty sure several others are wanting to do the same.

We will have a planning session in front of a RJ fire pit and start dishing out duties for Ram Jam that are not yet assigned.  If you want to defend yourself, you should be present.

I also plan on leading us on a couple of trails that we haven't been on yet.  Last time we did that we found that we could do stuff we had no idea we could do.

Right now it looks like we have 4 truck committed.  Let us know if you plan on coming.

Wanted or Trades / Need a wheel that matches this...
February 27, 2013, 09:59:48 PM
I have a full set of these wheels.  They are 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern and were on an 89 Cherokee when I bought it for parts.  Now I need one more for a spare.  Can anyone even identify the wheel.  There are two different wheel centers on them.  One says "American Racing" but I have no idea if it is an American Racing wheel or not.

Site Help / Ernest needs help.
February 24, 2013, 05:28:23 PM
Ernest thinks he is being left out.  He cannot get on the forum.  For a long time he didn't have a reliable internet.  He apparently now has service.  He can also get on line at work.  He claims that his password just won't work and he can't set up a new identity because he has not changed his e-mail provider or name.

Is there anything you can do for him?

Nick is not going to be able to finish this project.  His dad has some health issues and Nick will be buying his unfinished house.

Vehicle is a 82 RC.  We installed a 360 Magnum with a megasquirt 2+ computer, built by megasquirt.

It is getting signal from a crank position sensor and will start but needs tuning.  Driver side window is broken.  Front seats are from the 96 1500.  New tires (32") on turbine wheels.

$1,500.00

I will dig up some photos and publish here in a short.

Truck is near Iola, Texas.

Fabricator's / U-joint removal with a ball joint press
December 16, 2012, 08:24:45 AM
Many of us don't have a sufficient shop press or a vice big enough to press out u-joints.  The option many of us has been using has been a shop hammer, a big bolt and a large socket.

A handy tool to have at home is a ball joint press.  The one from Harbor Freight is economical and usable.  It also is great for removing and installing u-joints and is even readily portable.

Here is a video of the removal of a u-joint from a driveshaft.  Installation is almost as easy.

Wanted or Trades / need front driveshaft for a Cherokee
November 30, 2012, 09:12:11 PM
I need a front driveshaft from a Cherokee to build a rear driveshaft after installing a slip joint eliminator in my project.  The yoke that will be installed fits the double cardan joint on a Cherokee front driveshaft.

Year model will make no difference.  It would have been a direct fit if I had not installed a bigger tranny so I will have to cut down the driveshaft to fit.

General Discussion / Odd Willys
November 10, 2012, 07:35:31 PM
My son, who lives in Lima, Peru, has sent me pictures of a couple of vehicles in his neighborhood.  This is one of them.  We don't know anything about this vehicle.  We don't know if it is a factory built vehicle or a chopped station wagon with the back of a pickup grafted on the back.

It might be a 4x4 but I'm betting it is a 2x.  Note that it only has one wiper base.  Lima is a real desert.  They might have as much as 1/2 inch of rain in a wet year.  There are months that have never recorded a rainfall.  Therefore, NO rust.

Anyone ever seen anything like this before or know what it really is?

The back of the vehicle sports a spare rack that doesn't look original to me but the light(?) on the left side looks like something that could have been factory.  Obviously, the rear bumper is "after market".

News / Ryan's old tires
November 06, 2012, 08:10:27 AM
The tires are now mounted.  They are a match to the tires on her husband's Dodge pickup.

I'll try to get a pic in a day or two but she signs on her new house Thursday and is planning on sleeping in her new house Thursday night.  We may be busy...

Maybe we can get her to take it out next go round.

Thanks.

Technical Help / Carb on a Magnum engine?
October 29, 2012, 08:37:03 PM
Nick has decided that he would rather put a carb on his 96 360 magnum engine than deal with the megasquirt computer.   The engine is now in a 82 RC.  He originally wanted to pull a trailer but I think he now just wants a running truck.

The way I understand it, the LA intake will not bolt to the magnum heads.  Is there some approach to this, other than replacing the heads?

We have ignition modules, coils, distributor and all the other stuff we would need to make it work.  We also have an Edlebrock manifold and a Holley 4 bbl that would probably be big enough for the 360.

Can the aluminum manifold for the LA (318) be modified to fit the magnum heads?  Is there a possibility of putting the 4 bbl on the magnum intake in place of the throttle body and plugging the injectors?

I suspect this has been discussed but I have no internet at home and have not had the time to do much research yet.

I know the fuel pump might be a problem but we have an older gas tank that we can use and install an in-line electric pump rated for the carb.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Nick might be interested in some sort of trade too, but be advised that the engine has been set up for batch feed, instead of sequential feed on the injectors.  It would have to have a new harness or be rewired to go with a factory computer.

Cars and Trucks for Sale / 1950 Dodge Panel Wagon
October 14, 2012, 04:07:19 PM
I found a 1950 panel wagon on the road yesterday.  I don't know who owns it but it is for sale.  It is in pretty sad shape but I have never seen but just a couple of these vehicles before.  It appears to pretty much be all there but it has some dents and some major rust issues.

It is located in Roans Prairie, Texas.  If anyone wants more information and can't get anyone on the phone number painted on the windshield, let me know and I will drive back out there and see if I can find the owner/seller.

Cars and Trucks for Sale / Willy wagon for sale, Texas
September 17, 2012, 07:00:58 PM
I have a lead on a 4x4 Willys Wagon.  It is said to be running but without brakes.  The picture I'm posting is several years old.  When I find out more specifics I will see if someone can go and inspect it.  It is in or near New Braunfels.

I have asked what year, title, how much and can we inspect it.

I don't have a place to put it or funds to buy and work on it.  Anyone interested?

BTW, the back window looks different from the wagon I had.  It almost looks like it has ambulance doors on the back.  If it does, it would be pretty rare.
