Title: ProjectPW '79 Utiline Build
Post by: ProjectPW on February 26, 2014, 03:30:04 PM
I have been building this truck for almost 15 years.  Dad has owned it since new off the show room floor! Here are some pics of the latest improvements :)

The Doubler was the main attraction on this overhaul

The shifter for the doubler is a snug fit , but awesome hardware. The steering was also upgraded with a PSC kit and some awesome Jungle frame boxing kits

Suspension issues required further modification- Jungle Jim supplied spring hangers and shackles all around. All tied together with skyjacker 6" front springs and 4" lift rear chevy springs that measure i n at 56" in length. This pushed the rear axle back by 2". The front was pushed forward 1" with a zero rate block. Total lift = 7-8" over stock and should be able to clear the tires  :steeringwheel:

There was also a small matter of the bed falling apart  :dontknow: .....any way here are a few pics to tease you ...... I will take some of the final product tomorrow  ..... oh almost forgot about one more item. The doubler has required extensive modification of the transmission crossmember  :violent1: The final package will be using single 1410 ujoints (no more crappy CV) at the transfer case as well as the diffs

That's some awesome stuff.  Looks like you will have a whole new truck the next time we see it.   :13:

In that last pic, what is that big box under the truck.  Is that for the gas tank?

No that is the pass through for the front driveshaft- gas tank has been relocated to the bed (aluminum fuel cell) to allow for an exhaust system that wont get smashed- the battery has also migrated to the bed  :017:

Like a super HD safety loop?  Also forgot to ask about tires.  You said the lift should fit the tires.  They fit before with less lift so are there new meats for this monster?

Cool beans

The crossmember mod is to clear the drive shaft. With the doubler and a lift the driveshaft runs right through the crossmember  :tard: It might work....we'll see I need to order driveshafts  :017: ......tires....what tires?  :o

The bed was competely overhauled also. After the last run at Marble Falls it became apparent that the bed was no longer really ....attached.....just kinda chillin' and boucing around with the rotting remains of the last boards we put in  :violent1:.  We used a 4x8 piece of diamond plate welded in from the bottom for a nice seamless "factory" look  :great: The fuel tank, fuel pump and battery were relocated to the front of the bed with the toolbox mounted behind leaving about four feet of bed space. Finishing touches included new mounts for the front of the bed that are actually attached now and a cool spray in bed liner called Gator Guard  :great:

You Forget he Employs a Actual Engineer at his shop that does that work for him  ;)

You would be surprised what you can build with a Arc Welder and a Cutting Torch and they are relatively cheap, Stop Buying Tires and you can afford the tools!!!!  :laughing4:

I have to learn how to weld first... I can't do jack with the mig welder I  have... granted its a cheap one and that could be one of my issues... the other issue is space... yeah its a 3 car garage but it fills up fast.

my next tool purchase is a nice mig welder and a nice air compressor... my little 20 gal is not cutting it for higher psi stuff.

but yes I plan to start trying to do some more stuff like that. and besides you saw what tires I had to work with... I had to do something lol

Title: Re: ProjectPW '79 Utiline Build
Post by: ProjectPW on January 05, 2015, 08:03:49 AM
Well I scored a 2nd gen dana 70 with 4.10 gears for the rear...... I am thinking that i will get it installed  and then tackle the gear swap and carnage repair up front.... I got a set of 35 spline inner and outer chromoly axle shafts for the front axle with matching bomb proof spartan hubs. I really want to do the gear swap up front to match the rear at the same time as the axle shaft swap (I hate taking shit apart twice).

Title: Re: ProjectPW '79 Utiline Build

Ok update.... I drove the Top Hand to a local car show and found that the tires are not even remotely balanced. The truck drives very well on the road aside from extremely unbalanced tires. Another issue is that 4th gear is essentially worthless until about 50mph...not enough power.... @ 60 mph the engine is loping along at 1900 rpm.

I am not too worried about the tire issue, but the gearing issue was already a problem when on the trail. Simply not enough low range to keep wheel speed to a desirable level when crawling up the ledges. This lead to multiple failed attempts on trails that were otherwise doable with the previous setup.

I have sourced a good dana 70 rear from a 2002 Ram 2500 with rear discs. It is in usable shape, has a crap-loc and 4.10 gears. My original plan was to regear the front d60 to match this axle while I replace the broken axle shafts and hubs. Unfortunately that will not yield an adequate reduction from the current 3.55 gears. Another issue is the crap-loc rear....they suck! on flat ground it is better than nothing but given the conditions this truck endures it is essentially worthless.

Solution: Given a 36-37" tall tire the gears that will be needed are at the minimum 4.56-4.88:1.  Luckily a 5.13 thick gear can be sourced that will still work with the current carrier/spartan locker in the front d60. It also means that a 35 spline detroit locker must be used for the rear dana 70 (32spline stock)...luckily dana 80 axle shafts from a 2nd gen single wheel will work to upgrade the rear from 32 spline to 35 spline shafts and save a bit on cost for the detroit locker....

A 5.13 gear will give me a cruising rpm on the road between 2500-3000rpm (sweet spot for a 318). It will also give a final crawl ratio of 92:1. I am thinking that I really dont want to do this again, so as they say go big or go home!

Eric I know what you are thinking.... :tongue3:

I will post some pics as work begins. I will be starting with the rear axle since it is on stands. Gotta get to work if this SOB is gonna hit the trail again anytime soon

In the name of the greater good of all Dodges some or all of it will be a part of Project keystone.... but seriously it is essentially worse than an open diff.... The limited slip / crap-loc rears are not worth the effort unless used on the street with small tires. The only time they work is when they dont need too... When they need to lock in and keep the tires turning when it gets gnarly they just suck  :dontknow:

Yeah thats true.

I think I am going to have to do something different soon, the miller locker is very unforgiving on the street. Even when wet. Not that its on the street a lot.

This weekend we were doing a little test and tune on the RCs and the Top Hand. Apparently my clutch was on its last legs and decided to blow....no slipping and the release bearing looks ok, but I think the springs in the pressure plate or clutch hub may be wasted  :dontknow: long story short it is no longer functional  :violent1: ..... This week is going to be a blow out of parts installing hopefully.... the gears&locker should be here Wednesday... If all goes well I will have a clutch in it by Thursday and maybe install the new D70 fridayish.

Sounds like a good time.

I took tomorrow off to replace some bad lifters in the 2003 durango and to hopefully work on the cummins. New injectors are here and ready to go, just waiting on the leak down tester adapter to test leak down and compression.

Still can't start it even after all thats done  :angry5:

new fuel filter setup won't be here till thurs. Can't risk those nice new injectors with the factory filter setup after all the issues its had.

My fingers are crossed the test go well.

FYI If anyone wants to put a doubler in their truck make sure to replace anything that would require pulling the transmission to fix. IE-- Clutch!!

That Doubler weighs a Shit Ton!!! And is not simple to pull out. Noah Damn near broke his back when it slipped off the transmission jack.

Good news is Noah figured out how to blow out a spring in the clutch and discovered I had a bell housing to replace his booger-ed one  ::)

I'm curious how much the performance gain Noah will get with this new gear set up.

A fully locking locker front and rear, plus 5.13 gears.

Tweak the Rear Suspension. :040:

Should make One Bad-Ass Rig!!

We may no longer be able to keep up with him  :steeringwheel:

I do have to get the head gaskets fixed though, over heating is not fun.

I also want to do a run this spring without the boys so I can maybe be a little more crazy, but that could be a bad thing  :icon_scratch:

I have broke a lot of shit with them in the truck, could be worse with them not there.... no mater what I know the main rule....

don't try to make a ramcharger fly, it does not end well.

Y'all are ridiculous lol  :tongue3: .... Status on Top Hand is good. I have the new rear axle built and ready to roll under the truck. I finished the front gear setup yesterday and will be getting the axle shafts/and outer hubs/bearings etc installed today. It may be trail worthy within the next week

As a side note I am really enjoying the process of setting up gears. It is extremely tedious and all said and done takes an incredibly large amount of time  :confused2: . However it has been a good learning experience and I feel confident that the new 5.13 gears will run a long a happy life. The rear axle took aproximately 20-25 hours from start to finish.... the front axle will probably be about 15-20..... I am getting the hang of it though  :13:

I may have the rear end secured to the truck today and the necessary brake plumbing done.... I have a lot left to do after that but at least I can hook up driveshafts and get the new gears run in a bit on the lift.  I am really trying to get this thing off my lift and free up my sanity for actual paying work. I have a ton of stuff I should be doing, but I have also got to have this truck back to some level of functionality....it drives me nuts when shit is broke  :violent1:
