Title: Rough Country 4" Lift
Post by: SixGun on June 28, 2013, 11:36:05 AM
I've been seeing quite a few guys going with the Rough Country lift.  The price is considerably cheaper and I'm sure that is the main reason BUT is it a decent lift?  Anyone with one of these setup and used that can attest to it PRO or CON?  Considering it for my budget build on the 76 RC.  Anything over 4" starts adding $$ fast for required additional parts.

i would probably guess it is cheaper because they use 3" blocks to lift the back end instead of replacing the springs like the more expensive kits.

Comparable lifts with other companies using the blocks/ add-a-leaf and front springs BUT no steering block run $200 more and up.

BTW there is a discount for RCC members too.

Top Gun Customz sold me one in early '07... before I KNEW better...  ::)

They use the knuckle block, instead of a drop pitman arm, or adjustable draglink.  At THAT time, they went with the double shock setup for each corner - we're actually gonna ditch those, for single Bilstein 5125's.  The steering stabilizer is a single unit, but they market the 4 1/2" lift as something you can run 35's with... which should utilize a dual stabilizer... so you end up adding that later, too.

My spring packs seem OK... a bit stiff still at this point, as my RC only has 50 miles on it since the lift and restoration work.  It's STILL in the shop for the re-gear, steering & tranny work, so that hasn't changed.  We'll hafta see how those hold out - especially with the custom front bumper & multicarrier both loaded down.

I'm sure Rough Country has a better kit than the entry level unit; my advice would be, to buy THAT instead.

Thanks War Wagon, but now it opens up more questions.  LOL

Knuckle blocks, adjustable drag links, drop pitman arms ... whew ... did I get it all?  Pros and cons on these guys?  Anyone have some stories to tell?

You know, for the price of the basic kit from Rocky Mountain, 2 new front springs with associated hardware seems like a good deal in itself.  I am leaning towards a rear shackle flip for around 4-5" lift in the back.   I figure I could always shave the rear block to get it leveled if that's an issue.

Just curious WW if any of those 50 miles were offroad?

i would be temped to used Jungle Jim's products front and rear. his stuff looks great and is strong enough to be used on a diesel.

i think the difference in price just like a those fancy steering shafts like you have. they vary in price depending on where you get it.

I bought the rough country lift for the 91 ramcharger. this was suppose to be 4" lift kit with 2" blocks (so 2" spring 2" block?)

well I am now putting it on the 93 (well rear is on there) because its more like a 6" lift with no blocks  :confused2:

they seems like good springs, and came with bushings. I removed the bushing's for Jim's 2 part bushings. I also have his HD bolts. Thats the last thing I have to do, drill out the front spring bolt hole so I can get a socket around the bigger nut.

My front springs are a set of NOS "Rod Hall" springs. They have 5 or 6 leafs vs the factory 3 and between the 2 it gives a really nice stance. The front springs are stiffer than the back, just because of the technology used to assemble them.

I like the springs so far, and they seem nice. We shall find out come RamJam.

NO.  It steers like a wounded rhino currently - hence the reason I'm going with a Borgeson HD steering gearbox and HD steering shaft - to clean up a LOTTA slop in the factory units.  Driving on Pittsburgh streets was adventurous enough!  :confused2:

For BIG tires, the adjustable draglink makes more sense (lets you turn RIGHT & left  :tongue3: ) - for a lift of less than 6", you won't need the drop pitman arm AND adjustable draglink... which we discovered... after I'd paid for BOTH...  ::)

What do you consider to be "big tires"?  I am going to be using 33's on 15x8's.

I'd say 35's on up.

Well the Rough Country lift just came in today.  Took 2 Looooong weeks to come in.  Bought it from Rocky Mountain Suspension with free shipping and RCC discount, it came out to $424 out the door.  New front springs and hardware, steering block and hardware, rear add-a-leafs and hardware, and rear 2" block.  I opted for the nitro shocks all around and that added a mere $100.  Definately a good value.  Wish me luck... :035:

I bought a Rough Country  lift accidentally. Made a silly offer on ebay and it took. Granted it was a block system, but thanks to a particular White RC and its owner going for an even bigger lift, we were able to switch the springs as well. Removed 2 leafs and an over load if I remember correctly to get it to not be so stiff.
