Title: TBI stalling issue.
Post by: phillip637 on November 03, 2012, 05:17:12 PM
I've mentioned this issue in my other thread but can't get it fixed so figured I start a thread on this specific issue.

1989 ramcharger 318 TBI

Stalls when coming to a stop/idle.

Does not stall if put in neutral when coming to a stop.

Codes: 15 vehicle speed sensor code.

Vehicle speed sensor controls how much the idle speed motor stays open when decelerating with closed throttle

Replaced vehicle speed sensor, and idle speed motor

No change with this issue, codes came back.

What do you guys think???

One more detail I forgot to mention it has a 727 automatic trans.

I would inspect the wire loom and make sure the vss has a good signal ground. Also inspect your kick down linkage and make sure the return springs are intact and pulling the TV closed at an idle.

we have already checked all that. we are gonna call an old freind that is very knowledgeable on TBI and see if he can shed some light on this.

I played with the idle speed screw on my 91 once and it acted similar to what you are describing.  I would drive it and after warmup when I came to a stop it would die.  I would have to rev it in neutral to keep it from turning off.  It progressively got worse.  Got smart and used the FSM procedute with a tachometer and that solved the problem.

it stalls when cold too and it has no problem idleing in nuetral and it can be in gear when stopped and it still idles fine, so its not idleing to low or loading up with fuel.

Just for shits and giggles try down shifting it to make sure its not a valve body problem. Maybe sticking in second until complete stoped?

Not a lock up trans so valve body issues wouldn't cause this

Fixed it. Problem was a simple connection. 4wd models there is a wire extender for the vss, it came apart and I just didn't see it until today it was hanging down from under the truck. Feel pretty stupid but oh well it's fixed now.

Just wish I could found this before I bough a new vss. I looked this thing over really good several times then the other day saw some wires hangin that I never saw before. Makes me feel dumb as hell, but oh well
