General Discussion / Need some pulleys
February 19, 2014, 06:50:14 PM
Alright fellas, looking for non AC pulleys. Small block. Getting ready to pull the engine out of the 79 to reseal it and am ditching the AC. (it doesn't work and why would I want it in a pop top?)

If anybody has any or finds them please let me know. Thanks.

General Discussion / New stuff on the 01 ram
February 06, 2014, 08:38:42 PM
So last Friday the wife and I swapped rigs for the day. I needed Grimace (or minivan) to take the dog to the vet. Anywho, we go to dinner that evening. I start the ram and here a exhaust leak, coming from drivers side. Manifold gasket, crap.

So, I discuss with my lovely wife. I rationalize it this way. "Honey, I'm thinking it's the gasket but, I can't be sure. Could be the manifold itself. Now the smart bet would be just to get a set of shorty headers blah blah." She see's the logic in that. So now I'm emboldened. I decide to go for it. "Now, as long as that has to be done this would be a good time to get a new y pipe for it." She eyes me and asks 'Why?" I says "The cat convertor is in it and well, it has been low on performance, kinda sluggish, gas mileage has been lacking......"

She eyeballs me. She knows what I'm up to. Here it comes, shot down in flames... "Well, if you think it NEEDS it......" GREEN LIGHT!

So Tuesday morning I go to jegs and order the y pipe. (cat delete but has the O2 bungs) Then over to summit, pacesetter headers go! They come in Wednesday. Sweet. Then I think "Screw this. It's cold outside and it won't fit in garage. Call the local shop a guy owns that I went to school with."

I call this morning around 8. Ask him when he can get it in. He says bring it down, so I do. They got it done after hours (cuz I need it tomorrow for the wife to drive so I can take dog back to vet again). Don't know what install is gonna cost but I can say this, what ever it costs it's well worth it. That truck hasn't ran that good in a while. Have to actually watch the loud pedal on snow right now. All it wants to do is break them loose. (and I have new skins on it)

Be interesting to see if it helps mpg any. I'm not really counting on it and don't care. It runs great again. When it gets warm I need to do the plate on the bottom of the intake and at that time it will get new cap, rotor, wires. Oh, and 4 hole injectors. Electric fans too. But, best bang for the buck, those pacesetter shorty's and the y pipe from jegs, heck yes.

So a buddy of mine texted me about a Winchester 94 30-30. Found one for sale for $500. He asked what did I think. I said "that's f'ing high. Better be gold plated." He told me what they usually go for. I said no way. So I look on Winchesters site. Needless to say I had sticker shock. Granted, again, it's msrp but, $1,299.99. I couldn't believe it. Good thing I'm going Thursday to talk to my insurance agent about insurance on my guns. But had I not known I would potentially have screwed myself.

I have a 94. Paid $120 for it,,,,,,,,, back in 1987. That's the beautiful part with guns. They never really lose value. If anything the increase. (not all but some.)

General Discussion / Ebay, at times, can be sweet
January 20, 2014, 07:07:32 AM
We all know how bidding on stuff can go. At times you win, other times know when to walk away. People get caught up in bidding fever and next thing you know.. This time it worked out.

I was watching a intake manifold for the 79 on fleabay, auction ended Friday. Edelbrock air gap intake. I've ran the performer intakes before and have always been happy but this time I wanted the air gap. Always thought that style of intake was cool and the obvious benefits of keeping the runners away from the heat of the engine.

Short story longer, bidding ended Friday and I got it. The manifold had been installed on a rebuilt engine that had never been installed or fired up. Basically new manifold. With shipping $194. Pretty pumped about this.

General Discussion / Have to divert funds...
January 05, 2014, 08:28:12 PM
So it's snowing pretty good here today. Did some running around this morning, packed the nerfs with snow. Well, got the snowblowing done for the neighbor and my place, moved grimace (minivan) into the garage. Went to the ram, was kicking snow away from the nerf on the drivers side and boom, boot goes through the rocker. Great. Go to passenger side, same thing, boot through rocker. Marvelous.

I knew they were getting rusty but this was rot from inside out. The box has typical wheel well rot but the bed itself even has a couple holes in it. Of course the front fenders have the typical rot. But hey, the doors are still good! ;)

So I think, instead of doing the things I had planned for the RC that money is going to have to go into the 01 ram. It's a great truck. I don't want to get rid of it just because of rust. I know what I have and don't want to start over hoping said "new" truck is as good.

I'll give my body guy a shout this week and get a guesstimate. Heck, might even have him match paint the topper while he's at it. :laughing7:

General Discussion / Magpul pulls the plug......
January 02, 2014, 10:24:43 PM
Not trying to start any kind of tinfoil stuff. I just had to post this. I knew I liked their product but this makes me like the company even more. Now, if other manufacturers on the east coast would do the same thing.....

I emailed Muscle Motors. (they're located in Lansing, MI) These guys build engines (mopar) and ship them world wide. Great group of guys and their engines are top shelf. My dad had his 440 built there when we restored his charger so yup, personal experience with them. Anywho....

I emailed them and described what I wanted out of my 360. Told them no more than 300hp. Told them the exhaust I just recently had installed and that I'd be running the holley projection fuel injection. No granted, it's been 20 years (give or take) since the 440 was built and I remember what my dad spent. Well, the price tag for the 360 is about what my dad's 440 cost. Almost $4,400.

Now I have yet to go in and talk to Eric at muscle motors but I may end up just having them do the machine work and I'll assemble it. Might save some cash.

I won't have any other place touch it but man, has the price of rebuilding a engine gone up that damn much? Granted, like I've said, these guys are top shelf, none better in my opinion but wow. I know when I get it back EVERYTHING will be new or thoroughly checked like any good shop does. Basically block, crank, heads and rods are the only thing reused.

I imagine most of you guys just build your own and just have a place do the machine work. Does this quote really seem high?

General Discussion / Ok, who got what for Christmas?
December 26, 2013, 12:42:41 PM
I'll kick it off. Wife got me another workbench for the basement and new carhart insulated bibs. (apparently my almost 30 year old bibs bothered her.) My mom gave me my grandpa's Remington 721 30-06. (best present EVER) Guess I really need to find a gunsafe now....

General Discussion / Stupid freezing rain.....
December 22, 2013, 09:48:59 AM
So the past two days we've had rain, freezing rain. Makes for awesome walking/driving experiences.

The wife and I went down to Battle Creek yesterday (about 70 mile drive) to see friends that were up from North Carolina. The drive down no biggie. Coming home (roughly 10:30 pm) yeah, that was fun. Once we got onto the expressway it wasn't horrible, just crappy. Only counted 3 vehicles in the ditch/median. However, we got close to Lansing (about 25 miles from home) and couldn't help but notice really bright flashes. Wife asked "is that lighting?" to which I respond "nooo. probably a transformer or something really big, handling a lot of electricity, blowing." I must have been right. A friend of mine that lives in that area said he was without power.

She slipped getting out of the ram yesterday and tweaked her back. My younger great dane is scared to climb the deck steps to come back in so I have to pick her up and carry her up the steps. (she only weighs 145 lbs. Should have bought a corgie) Limb on the neighbors tree broke and landed on my side of the fence. Not huge, didn't break the fence but it took a branch off the tree in my yard which sucks. That tree is beautiful when it blooms in the spring. (but hey, at least it didn't land on my metal storage shed)

Of course I go to get more salt (or anything that will melt ice) yesterday afternoon and no dice. Every place was sold out. (I had used the last of mine) Thankfully the pet store we get dog food at had it so I bought two 50 lbs bags. Now I get the fun job of spreading that today to try and clear the sidewalk and driveway and of course deck steps. (don't think I want to keep picking my dog up)

On the bright side, we made it home fine last night. (that little 97 town & country handles pretty good :steeringwheel: was probably better off with that than the ram) and we haven't lost power so I can't complain more than what I already have. Guess after spreading salt I'll just play in the basement for a while (always something going on down there) and after that I set my butt in my recliner, my older dane (she only weighs maybe 130 lbs) will get up there with me and we'll probably take a nap.

General Discussion / Who reloads?
November 24, 2013, 02:31:01 PM
So early this year I got back into reloading my own ammo. Until recently I've just been doing handgun. Well, I decided to dive into rifle calibers. Two calibers mainly. Anyways, so I was resizing cases last Wednesday and it happened, ripped the rim off the case and the case is stuck in the die. Marvelous. So I just ordered the RCBS extraction kit.

I have a bunch of 5.56 I'm doing and have to remove the crimp from the primer pocket so this will take a while but it will be worth it. 308 is my main one though. Get the chamber depth measured blah blah so I can really make my bolt action perform like I know it should.

Like I said, all I've done to this point is handgun which is easy because it's all straight wall cartridge. I do it because I enjoy it. Developing loads that each handgun likes, get the most out of them. It can be time consuming really dialing them in but if you want the most accuracy.... I know my .44 mag is so much more fun to shoot now that I'm loading for it again. Can't wait to see what my .308 will do.

Projects / Here's my 79
November 12, 2013, 08:01:46 AM
Well here it is fella's. My latest RC. 79 out of Cali via Texas. Long story short, bought the truck in May. Received truck in June. Had title, wrong VIN. (don't know if it was a bonded title or something but it wasn't manufacturers VIN) Took about two months to get title with good VIN. Got that, slapped insurance on it, drove it a little, sent it to a friends shop for work that frankly, I didn't feel like messing with right now. Got a call from him yesterday, it's finally in the shop and should be done by end of week/beginning of next week.(he's also using it as a "training aide" for the younger guys at his shop. Show them the ropes on dealing with the hubs/bearings)

Work getting done.
Headers (pictured) with dual 2.5" pipes. Flo-pro mufflers.(they have to weld the heads up. Has smog ports and in the description it didn't say anything about that.) Install O2 bung and sensor. (it's getting holley projection unit)

Rip apart front end. Turn rotors, new calipers/pads/rubber hoses, clean and repack wheel bearings, new axle shaft u-joints.

I installed new tranny pan and filter. (pan was leaking so just decided to get pan with drain plug.)

When I get it back going to pull the engine and reseal it. She has a couple leaks. Also throw in new tranny input seal while I'm there.

Also threw in new shocks, sway bar link bushings and 3 row radiator and borgenson steering shaft. Oh, and a mopar unsilenced air cleaner assembly. ;D

This winter just want to reseal engine and get the injection installed. Drive it next year and enjoy it. It's a pretty solid truck. We'll see where it goes after that.

General Discussion / Veterans day

To all the brother vets, have a great day.

To all those that support/ed us, thank you as well. Without the support the job gets difficult/lonely fast.

General Discussion / Computer question
November 07, 2013, 09:24:56 PM
Ok, so when I go to attach a pic and hit "browse" and pull up my pics folder, not all the folders show up in there but when I just go in through the "start" icon it will bring all the folders up. (hope this isn't too confusing) Anybody know why it isn't playing nice? I have other pics I could be posting but can't get to them through "browse" on here. (does it on RCC too)

Wanted or Trades / Police wheels
October 26, 2013, 07:55:56 AM
Yup, the ever infamous police wheels, want a set. Sure, they can be found on ebay, for $500 a set. Little steep in my book. I know I know, it's not like you can just go to a tire place and order them but still... So, if you have a set you're looking to sell, let me know. I think they are the coolest wheels ever.(especially if they have the hubcaps with the holes)

Yeah, these guys....

General Discussion / Has it occured to anyone else
October 26, 2012, 05:19:13 AM
That most of us are actually organized hoarders? Think about it. If we get a chance to snag stuff for free or cheap we do. Those that have room one truck simply will not do. We try and save the old ones.(kinda like giving a rescue dog a forever home)

I know at one time I had 4 trucks. 1 in garage, 1 in driveway and 2 in backyard. I live in town and have a privacy fence but still, you just can't do that in town. I knew I had to do something so I ended up parting 1 out, scraped 2 others and kept the last. The last one ended dying of cancer but the drivetrain lives on in the 77 RC. I still have parts for a 80's model truck though. Never know when one might end up in the driveway. ;) See? Already planning on it happening. And my wife knows I'm chompin' at the bit to get a megacab diesel. She asked if I got the megacab would I get rid of the 01 1500. I just looked at her, turned and walked. She knew then that the 01 stays. Why would I want to get rid of it? It's a great truck with decent miles.(around 78k) and that's the last year of that bodystyle in the 1500.(see? can justify hanging on to it for numerous reasons that only make sense to me)

If I have my way I'd have my 77 RC, my 01 Ram 1500 and a newer megacab diesel. But still not sure it would end there. I really want to do a 2wd pop top and big block it and air bag the suspension and satin black paint. :laughing7: If this is a sickness,,,,,, I don't want a cure.
