Title: Ram Jam 2013 Events and Activities
Post by: ProjectPW on May 09, 2013, 05:00:35 PM
We need to have about 3-4 competitive events to let everyone see how their rigs stack up- events should be spit up between 2 days

#1: HILL CLIMB( day1) - I am thinking a timed run up the green miles 2 steepest sections- if you stop you are disqualified quickest to the top wins

#2  SLOW CRAWL (day 2)- Crawl down Green mile- slowest time wins- if you stop you are disqualified- we will do this

#3  OBSTACLE COURSE- NO POINTS FOR SPEED! we will need to pick a trail and mark off a bout 3 or 4 good obstacles with cones-
there will be an easy line and a hard line- more points for the harder line- no points for hitting a cone on an obstacle

#4 ??????- all input appreciated lets see what we can up with

non competitive events should include two organized trail rides for everyone to go out and play
Day 1- fence line run- all level 1-3 stuff with bypasses
Day 2- tower run-  for all those photo ops everyone loves-

Lets get some ideas out there and I will organize a schedule (yeah right...thats gonna work! :o)

I Like this idea. but it does need to be a timed event. The trick is to place cones in a way which cause the driver to get a faster time by actually goin slower. Meaning 10 sec Penalty for ever cone hit and no long straight aways. Now in saying this, the course needs to be setup for long wheel base vehicles. If its setup for short wheel base vehicles it gives them a significant advantage as far as turn radius is concerned. Meaning placing cones in a way that it takes a swb one turn but lwb a 3 point turn.

Making the obstacle course on a actual trail can help in the sense that the natural obstacles will force the driver to go slower and drive smarter.

I actaully like the idea of using "Bronco Buster" For this event. Its a tight slow trail that even if the contestent throttle up they wont pull much speed and bounce around more than anything.

If we had a smooth enough space and enough water to make it really slick a barrel race might draw some people that might not enter some other events.

I have a pneumatic water pump if we could get permission to pull some water from some of the tanks.

I think as far as the quickest time event we need to be careful, don't want people getting hurt going to fast. maybe instead we have a closest to the "mean time"

example if we decide it should take 3:15 to get it done, then  the closest one to that time wins.

guess we could say like the price is right?

that would reduce some attempts at top speed, because you would be too far under the " mean time" and loose?

I don't want to be a wet blanket but outside of Dave getting hurt, there were a couple other speed based Red Bull & alcohol induced close calls.  Specifically a Jeep with no brakes rolling in front of Eric and a power sliding Jeep aimed at the spectators.  We were in a bad spot last time for what probably should have been a closed course event.  There was traffic passing on the main road we were using, kids walking around and the spectators too close to the action.  Just things to consider for the upcoming events.

Dont Worry Noah and I are are very awear of what went on during that time and are trying to think of ways to aviod it but still manage to have fun events.
The speed, alcohal, and open area are the three big areas we will address

thats why I said we might not want to do the quickest time but instead the closest to a set time... and that gives more control as to what the set time is people want to hit. I think it could be hard too, and would make it much more of a driver "sport" than a built truck sport.

On some of these climbs and or decents the shorter based vehicles will be at a distinctive disadvantage, Whatever events are done need to be evenly based for all who may show up driving whatever. Or have classes for vehicle/tire size, ect. Just something to thing of. Hate to see someone get hurt or damage their vehicle trying to participate. I guess what I'm saying is something for everyone. :dontknow:

I would also like to do a barrel run, location is the difficult part.... water on the course as Ron suggested would be a fantastic idea to keep dust down and slick it up a bit!

We can't do much about wheel base except making any turning obsticales even for both. On the trail SWB and LWB each have their own advantages and dissadvantages. I simply brought up wheel base because if we made a obsticale course with tight turns then i could kickass in the jeep making turns where as lwb vehicles would have to do several point turns.

We could do a stock- 33" Class and a 35"- unlimited class.

But keep in mind the more classes we make the more time its going to take. And in hine site it will divide up the group as a whole. So I will leave it to a vote. But I think there are way to many variations and ultimatley someone will whine about it not being fair .

For Example the trail Bronco Buster. We had a large number of different class vehicles on that trail. and I think they each had there own advantages and disadvantages. But they all made it with no problems.

Bronco buster is a level 4 trail-
Ernies ford- BB 390- 4spd- Locked Front and Rear 38" Boggers
Noahs PW- 300hp 318- 4spd- Locked Front and Rear 33" BFG
Wills RC- 360- 3 spd Auto- Locked Rear 36' Swamper SX
Erics Blue Jeep- Built 304- 4 spd- Locked Rear 33" Mud Kings
Daves Brown Jeep- 304- 4spd- Opened F/R - 35" BFG Kralwers
Ron's Creations- 318- 3 spd auto- Opened F/R- 32" All Terrians

We all Did that trail at pretty much the same pace with no issues. Now all are vehicles are very different in Power, Wheel Base, and Traction. But can anyone honestly say who would be fastest based on the stats of the truck? I don;t think so. I couldn;t even bet $100 on who would win.

Thats why im leary about classes. My jeep flew up some obstacles that ernies ford had trouble with. And Ernies ford also went through obstacles easly where i had problems with. And those are two completely different machines.

But here is another example- Dave's and My Jeep. Both CJ7 4x4 304 4spd Jeeps. His is has 6-8 inchs of lift and 35" BFG krawlers. Mine has 4" of lift and 33" Mud Kings. If we did Classes Him and I would be in two separate classes even though are Jeeps are al most the same. Now My jeep has a rear locker and his doesn;t. That right there made a differents of night and day between us. Dave would have to throttle up a ton more and bounce all over the place to get up obstacles where i was able to gear down and walk up them. But he also didn;t bottom out like i did on some obstacles. Just food for thought.

I think if we do all the events some will do well in some events and others will do well in the other events. I think it will equal out.

Have we considered a Krawler Barrell Run? Same concept except in a area where there are obstacles we can set the cones/barrells on.

I'm Serious, If we find a area that we do the traingle pattern with a cone on a obstacle or obstacle between cones I think it would be really fun!

I think that there would be no way to make it even across the board.  I figure it's more about being together and having a ball while laughing our asses off.  I don't participate to win a plaque and don't expect to be top gun in any event.  Also, if an event is out of your comfort zone best to just leave it to the Dave and Ernest stunt team. No shame in that.

That being said, why not have teams just like you would in flag football.  Each team recovers their own and the last one in is the team's time.   I don't mind recovering Ernest.  I got you dude....   :lol_hitting:

It is difficult to make it even across the board.

I like the team idea or maybe pairs.

Teams of Two- One Big Vehicle, One Small ??

The first truck starts the timer and the last truck stops the timer. They would only be a strong as there weakest link. I.E. Tire size or wheel base. Kinda join the Classes together?

What do yall think?

Keep throwing ideas out there. We will figure it out sooner or later  :o

I was planning on bringing the Suzuki, but may try to go another way. :dontknow: Don't see where it would be able to run the higher # trails ect. Stock diffs, stock suspension, almost stock tires. I may be able to get the Chevy up and going. It might be more fun anyway. :great: Keep up the good work. Glad someone else is doing the planning... :victory:

Skip, Ron has open diffs and small tires, Dave has open diffs, Ryan has open diffs and stockish tires, and they went all over the place. ive seen that Suzuki at hidden falls and i know what its problem is........... You right foot!  I know the wheel base is small and it feels like its tippy, but seriously all you need is a heavier right foot and stop riding the clutch !! Ive seen many Suzuki out there in stock form and they go all over the place. Stop making excuses Skip!! Don;t Be Scared!! Just STAND ON THE SKINNY PEDAL!!

Or slap a lift and tires on the RC and Call it a day  :13:

Somewhere I have a new clutch for it. Just have to find it and get it in. No lift and 29" tires make it a challenge. Long wheel base truck 36" tires, 12" lift, auto trans, and a V-8. Decisions, decisions. I do have a lift for the RC and some 38's.

I am planning on having a lift on the 93 before we make it back... if I can swing it I would love a rear locker but I am not holding my breath.

I do have to say I was very happy with how the 93 did out there, minus the over heating which I think is a blown head gasket... I will keep putting water in there till it does not start  :evil6:

It is two weeks till Ram Jam. I'm busy at work and finishing up the fire pit. Ernest will be at sea for at least a week

We won't have our trucks in the best of shape and we aren't sure how we will get them there.

We will have some good firewood and enough to share.

We will bring a bunch of tools, including welder and torch again. There should be a bunch of people there besides us but we have the best camping area reserved.

Ernest and I plan on getting there Thursday unless the world comes to an end.

As of today the county Hoffen Falls is in is under a burn ban. Wood fires will almost  certainly be impossible.  I will have a fire pit for a door prize but will not be bringing my pit or fire wood. I will be doing my cooking with a small propane cook top.

I think you should come prepared for the burn ban to not be

We will still be bringing a bunch of tools and probably be working on both trucks before we can trail them.

Hey Will, we all missed you out there. :crybaby2:

It turned into quite a wrenching party but we were still able to have some fun inbetween break downs and quite a few recoveries.  I just started downloading some pics onto my computer and trying to get some up shortly.

Sam and Samantha (AKA unfortunate Sam and unfortunate wife) had a long bed V10 pickup and they got right into it.  Put them to work recovering some people from the middle of the pond (guess who) and dragging Fords backwards uphill with that monster V10.

Many of the guys aren't leaving until Monday because of the holiday and just about everyone stayed until late in the evening on Sunday to eat  some of Ryan's smoked brisket.  Yum Yum I must say.  We set up a couple of long picnic tables and had a Walton's family dinner.  LOL

Danger Dave up to his old tricks  :laughing7:

After he gets recovered by Ernest he laughs at all the seaweed hanging under his truck and turns around and goes in the other side with same result.

Here's a couple of pics of when Ernest broke down climbing the fenceline.

There were hundreds of Jeeps so we didn't have the Ram Jam Olympics agains.   :crybaby2:

However Ernest was definately having a mechanic's Olympic event repairing vehicles.  I can't think of anyone who didn't break down at all.  The only two that didn't drive out on their own power were Dave's Trail Duster and Ernest's Ford.  DD's Revenge according to Dave may retire or gonna have to totally re-engineer the tank suspension.  After busting a rear yoke on fenceline, Ernest limped it the rest of the way down the fenceline to Feeder creek and I tried to lead him out on an "easy" route to main road but he grenaded the front ujoint and possibly more coming out right on Bull Run.  That's where Dave rolled Stanley on last outing.  Took Noah's Top Hand to get him over a boulder and Sam's V10 to drag him backwards to camp.  We held up about 20 Jeeps and ATV's in the process coming from all angles.

Ron's Willys Replica died at the bottom of North Peak and I towed him back to camp.  Jeep guys were yelling, "Look, a Dodge pulling a Jeep".  Too bad it wasn't one of them towed by a 2X ha ha.

I really hate I missed this......    Now, whats goin on next year?  Is anyone here kinds planning to do a " Ramcharger.net" Ram Fest or something along those lines?  Personally I feel like the "other site" dont want to put anything into a RamJam then something else needs to happen...

You hit the nail on the head Will.  It's a damn shame.  Ron and Eric both gave a speech at the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon about that and possibly moving forward with our own RAM FEST or something voted on.  Really want to move things along on this site since there is no love anymore on RCC.  A lot of great members but no leadership or backing.  Seems like the guys that want to make things happen in our little wheelin' community are the same ones already here.  We are playing for their team without any sponsorship.  Might as well make our own team.  Sam Simpson was a family man and dedicated to our community.  Without him, the big bad RCC brute has no head.  It's one thing to provide great tech advice but we have evolved into an active wheelin' community as well.  Our vehicles are drivers and not trailer queens.  No offense intended to anyone into that but what good is a bad ass vehicle behind glass that says don't touch me.  Sam's V10 and Noah's Top Hand and Eric's AMC Jeep are prime examples of nice vehicles that are drivers too.

Okay too much rant - let's get some more pics and videos going.  Share share share....   :steeringwheel:

There was a lot of home made awards this year but it's the thought and not the money put into them.  Will made a Danger Dave award with some painted broken parts made into a trophy that I wish I had a pic of.   Knowing Dave, since he won it again (no surprise), he may have it as a hood ornament next year.  Eric made some nice wooden plaques.  I just want to thank everyone for Yolanda, my wife.  She won the Riding Shotgun award for best support during the weekend.  I know she is a wonderful lady with a loving spirit and now I know that you see it too.  She cried later because she really didn't see that coming.  She is the type of person that treats everyone like family and hey ... that is what we are.

Thats what I love about our group... we all get along like family... I have never wheeled with a better group...  we got pawpaw Ron, the crazy cousin Dave, lil troublemaker Ernest, and even the lil jeeper Eric that can never seem to get a running Dodge to bring out...  Gonna have to definately have a Dot.Net get together....

  That's the one.  Nice.... :sign0098:

BTW, we drew numbers and you got to pick what you wanted 1st come 1st served so to speak.  Apparently, the story is that those small block headers have changed hands within RCC quite a few times.  But the new guy, Sam with the V10, he eagerly snapped them up like gold.   Turns out he has a 75 RC back in California.  He's in the military at Ft. Hood right now. It will be a shame when he's gone .. he fits right in.

Well, it took all afternoon and evening to load 4 videos on YouTube.

Well, we made it home very un-eventfully.  I got to bed somewhere around 1:00 am and was at work before 8:00.  I didn't work for TDI Monday but I did repair the broken bump stop inside the right front coil spring.

Ernest got out of bed about 11:30.

I have a video to get posted and on line of Dave and the smoke but I'm waiting on a new power supply for my computer before I can get to the programs to make that happen.

I'm so glad someone was able to get pics. I took maybe two pics.  :laughing7: I had an amazing time even with all the break downs. I wasn't planing to break my drive shaft. As for the front axle. It did really good to make to its final resting place... :laughing4: :laughing4: As for the family part. I think we make a pretty good family. I want to thank everyone for everything. I hope we have many more to come.

Yup, Hidden Falls rocks.  No pun intended.   :evil6:

Samantha, you really got to put that video of us tug-o-war pulling Dave outta the pond by hand.  That's got to be funny to see.

Are you having trouble putting pics up on the site?  Those should be real easy unless you are making some fancy video slideshow.  Then that would be even better.  If that's the case, then take your time.

Other than astrong think coming from around my t-case/driveshaft area under load not really, I think it might be the exhaust bracket that is now making contact with the skid plate. My driveshafts seem to be fine but I'm  checking them for issues everyday just to be safe. And I in case it does
Break I've got my wrenches so I can take it off and get home in 4h...

Ryan, it looks like your exhaust pipe was rubbing the leaf spring if I'm seeing it right.

Sam, you can always take it to your motorpool and show them how to straighten your skid plate again. LOL

Myself, I got a little rear bumper hickey when I slipped sideways twice trying to climb out of a creek with some slippery mud all over the tires.  This was on a night run that Ernest and I took.  It was pitch black out there.

Dave wanted to do something to get some attention so he had to do something new.  Needing an ambulance or simply turning over a Jeep was old stuff.  So he thought he would burn up an engine for us.  By this time, swimming with ramchargers was an old thing too.
