General Discussion / Another Cherokee?
September 24, 2014, 05:13:16 PM
James wouldn't bid on it so I bid and bought a 94 4x4 Grand Cherokee with a 4 liter for $550.00.  It has a few problems, the biggest being that it is in Odessa.  That's only about 450 miles from my house...

Problem number two is it's color.  It's PURPLE.

Starts and goes forwards and backwards.  That's better than some vehicles I have bought.  I have it home some time Friday night.

I ordered a set of these spark plug wires for my truck but have to re-order a custom set due to changing the distributor.

The set costs $159 from the builder but you can buy them cheaper from Amazon.  Order from Amazon took over a week to deliver.  I will send them back in a day or two unless someone is interested.

If you have electrical interference problems these might be what you need.  If you have cross firing or knocking under load these might cure that too.  Look up their website.

City of Fort Worth has one in the LoneStar acution that will sell in 4 days from now.  It is missing both bumpers and the grille but looks real solid.  The distributor is in front...

As of this minute the bid on it is less than $900 and it is a 2 wheel drive vehicle.

It is an impound and it should be easy to get a title.

Other Outings / Huaco Springs - no off roading
August 12, 2014, 10:15:03 PM
I'll be going to the Guadalupe River Wednesday, August 20 and staying till sometime Friday if anyone wants to come visit.  There will be a lot of grand-kids present so we will go home before the beer party starts Friday night.

I hope to take the yellow and primer colored truck.  I need to fine tune the acceleration stuff on the computer but I think I'm on the right track.

Last outing it covered the windshield with mud right off.  I have extended the front fenders out 2" to fix that.

I've also spent a lot of time pulling and replacing the transmission.  I think I have finally solved all the problems.  I rebuilt a transmission pump from the 87 tranny and installed it in the 82 tranny.  I also plugged the stock transmission vent and installed one in the top of the case while the pump was out.

The Chrysler transmission that we all have was originally put on the road in 1956 in a steel case.  Not much has changed since then.  I suspect the original engineers would be pulling hair seeing their transmission in water and mud deep enough to pour in through the original vent.

Anyway, if you're still reading, I will be camped as close to Huaco Springs by the first crossing (Rockin R Campground) if yall want to come by.  Will have fire pit and some oak.  Phone number has not changed and I might even answer it, unless floating...

Parts for Sale / Wrecked 2000 4x4 3/4 Diesel
July 25, 2014, 07:48:13 PM
Some of you will remember or know AJ.  He has been to General Sam's with several of us.  He has access to a 2000 4x4 3/4 ton Diesel pickup with a bent frame but a good Cummins.  If you are interested, let's hear it.  As far as I know, the truck is in College Station.

My son is going to be moving back to College Station is right at a month from now.  He is wanting a basic transportation pickup.  Any brand would do but he will need to drive it to work, assuming he can get a job.  Budget is said to be a grand or two.

Anybody got anything that will run for sale?

Cars and Trucks for Sale / Mobile crime unit...
May 10, 2014, 09:35:33 PM
City of Killeen is selling a mobile crime unit.  It's basically an ambulance body that could make a good expedition add on for a pickup.

Parts for Sale / Magnum 360 exhaust manifolds
April 14, 2014, 09:03:10 PM
I'm gonna end up with a set off the 96 1500.  Anyone need them?  I also have a set of 90 model 360 exhaust manifolds.  The 90 manifolds most likely do not have that spring and counter weight.

And, I need a pair of small seats...  something like Cherokee seats.

Parts for Sale / Custom skid plate
March 15, 2014, 11:09:49 AM
I know every thing I have is custom, but anyone want this shod plate?

It was built to fit an 82 RC. Scratches came from my red truck at hidden falls. Make an offer. Any offer.

I owe Richard and Ryan. I guess they get first pick.

There is a wheeled excavator on the LoneStar Auction in far south Texas.  I has a 4BT to run the excavator and a 8.3 Cummins to run the truck.  Both were running, one needs a new clutch.  Has a 10 wheel frame and may have all three axles pulling...

Willacy county.  Has title.  Surface rust.  less than 24K miles. 1983 model.

Looks like something that Sam would want.

News / Houston Live Stock show...
February 03, 2014, 09:19:48 PM
Probably a better place to post this, but what the heck...

Wednesday, March 12th, my 11 year old grand-daughter will be riding barrels in the Paint Horse and Quarter Horse events at the Houston Livestock Show.  It's in the middle of our spring break and I'll be taking off a few days for this.

This kind of event is quite different than what you see at the rodeos but these young girls will be the ones riding in the big rodeos in a few years.  The girls in the rodeos are not much better, maybe a half second or so, and they will be watching these girls too.

Last competition she went to was just over 500 riders running barrels in one day...

By the way, this is Georgia.  She has been with us to General Sam's a couple of times.  Some of you will remember her.

There's a great big bus attached.

DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) is selling 40 buses at auction.  Many of them have Cummins diesels in them.  The 1999 buses that are not LNG have 661 cubic inches and 280 hp.

I wasn't able to get on line sooner.  Hard to do on the phone at a basketball game.  Then it went into overtime and despite the refs we managed to win it.

Anyway, Ernest and I are planning to go to General Sam's Saturday.  I know it is virtually no lead time but anyone who would like to join us is invited.

I've invited a few others, (Nick, my son-in-law, a guy with a Land Rover) and plan to ask another or two tomorrow.

If you can make it, please feel free to call me.  979 218 6002 is my work phone.  My personal phone number is good too since it is forwarded to the work phone.  I just haven't figured out how to forward text messages so the work number is best.

I would hope that we would be there about opening time and stay till Ernest breaks at least two axles.  I'll have the yeller truck and maybe an old Cherokee too.  We will not be staying the night unless we break too many trucks.

General Discussion / Another winch workout
January 12, 2014, 11:45:10 PM
Nick called me about 9.  He had his company truck stuck in the woods.  Ernest has just finished doing work on the OJ Bronco that his daughter drives but they couldn't pull the truck out with it.

The truck was buried  to the frame and the wheels were spinning freely.  I hooked the winch to it and it drug the Jeep.  We tied the Bronco on front of the Jeep and it drug both of them.

Tied the Jeep to a tree and winched it as far as the winch would go (attached to a chain, attached to the truck).  Then we hooked the Bronco to it and couldn't pull it out with a jerk strap.

Winched some more and then tried to jerk it out with the Jeep.  Since that didn't work, we hooked the winch up again and tied the Bronco on the front.  We got him far enough out of the hole to get the cheby to make it to the gate.

Told the wife I would be back by 11.  Made it by 11:07

Just another night in Texas.  (for you other guys... it was about 65 degrees at 10:30PM)

General Discussion / Old topic, new thought...
January 11, 2014, 07:59:54 AM
Ok, so I'm not around too much lately but it does occur to me...

Even if we can't come up with an event name, we need a bumper sticker.

I suspect some of us will eventually want a state sticker too.  Who is going to design one?

General Discussion / Harbor Freight winch problem solved
December 29, 2013, 04:31:39 PM
My winch quit working.  It would not go in or out.  I suspected the wired remote but couldn't try the wireless remote since I ran the battery down and don't have another.

I determined that power got to the plug on the control box but not to the switch in the cable.  Problem was in the plug on the cable.  I couldn't figure out how to get it apart so I carefully ground around the outside until I got it parted.  The first pic shows the problem.  The red wire, hot from the battery was parted at the soldier joint.

I re-soldiered the wire and did a temporary plug repair (second pic) so I could get the winch rope easily re-wound.

The wire can spin in the plug, making the wires susceptible to breakage.  I would suggest that you tape the wire to the back of the plug with some good ole black electrical tape to prevent this happening to your winch.

I will order a new cable if they don't cost a fortune but I might put a new plug on the winch.  That would make my cable different from everyone elses but I have never been accused of conforming...

Wanted or Trades / Looking for a CJ-8
December 22, 2013, 08:59:23 AM
My son live in Lima, Peru but will be coming back to Texas before too long.  He has a bunch of boys, three to be exact, and wants to build a CJ-8.  It will receive a cheby engine but it guess it's not the end of the world.

So, if anyone knows of a scrambler with a decent body (a rebuildable body) please let me know.  I think he plans on buying a new frame but we will need a vehicle with a title.

I don't think location is the end of the world but it would be better if it wasn't too far away.  If it has to be picked up before he comes back from Peru, I think I know who will have to do it...
