Watching Rod Hall's class 4s on CBS' Wide World of Sports and in OffRoad magazine back in the day is what got me hooked on 4x4s and Dodge

Is there any good Rod Hall videos out there?

I've seen some. When you search, make sure you put Dodge in the search or you'll get Hummer stuff. He also has a website but haven't been on in a long time. Their is/was a photo archive on it that showed some photos of his 70s-80s cars. (Desert racers used to call them cars - not trucks)

:steeringwheel:  The opening scene from Two Lane Black Top was probably the best part of the whole movie.  I caught that opening scene one day a long time ago and that's why I watched the whole movie.  It reminded me of the street racing growing up when there were no tuner cars around just good old fashion hotrods.  Check out the Daytona Charger and the 'Cuda.

The opening scene in TLB was cool. The Daytona (King Daytona) was actually Big Wille's street racer back then. Search using Big Willie Robinson - quite a character!! His wife had a Daytona also!

This one is kinda funny as this couple goes on their first offroad drive at Big Bend, TX in their new F250.  The husband seems to be having a blast but the wife doesn't like the roughness of the drive.  The comments she makes are funny as the truck hits the rear bumper and gets a good brush pinstriping and more.  At the end, they spot a tarantula.  The husband makes the comment that you know it's a really big spider when you can see it crossing the road.  Listen up for the time she is talking on one side of the truck and you can hear him peeing on the other side.    :laughing7:

No doubt - it is addictive.  Somebody will throw a link out there and next thing you know it's an hour later.  I like those old videos.  I watched several with nothing but Nascar crashes in the old days.  Those cars back in 1964 going 170mph + is scarey stuff.  There wasn't a lot of safety barriers I noticed either.

Cars going OVER the fence and OUT of the track were NOT UN-common in the '60's!  :o  I think that actually happened at Talledega again in the '90's - yep, here it is; I found the video - which may be the last time it's happened of late, but the first time I'D seen it happen live!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=iqvnhZJDXzE

Love me some '60's NASCAR - my dad still owns the '64 Mercury Montclair he bought new that year; the last year they raced full-sized Mercs - but I wasn't even 3 yet, when 1970 rolled around, so I live 60's NASCAR vicariously through Youtube.  ;D

that would probably also get you new gears when the axle seals failed from overheating and you pretty much have to rebuild the rear axle anyway.

When I was in college, Doc Severinsen came to our university and did a free talk to all the area high school kids we could get in our facility.  He drove over in a rent car, talked to the kids and then played a few tunes with our stage band.  When it was over, he talked to us for a few minutes and drove back to the coliseum for a rehearsal.  There are so few people that realize how great an honor it was to play in a band that backed up Doc.

I don't have a hemi.  The 383 I have won't fit but I do have a 360 magnum waiting on a chance.  I'll end up having to replace the 15 gallon tank with a 35 gallon RC tank.  That way I should be able to go around the block two times...

You know, I've driven Ron's truck err.. Jeep and I have to say that it feels very light and nimble but he says that it is 4000 lbs.  It really moves with the 318 so I can't imagine the power on tap with a 360.  If I remember correctly, he put on some bigger tires with a more aggressive tread also which helped it bite the smooth surfaces better.  I can't wait to see the new build.

Yup, I like Toby's music. I wasn't really too much into country music until about the last year or so. Guess music taste changes with age. I still like rock but diggin' country more and more.

I'm wondering if they took into account lost/destroyed weapons.  MP-5's and Steyer Augs weren't cheap, even BEFORE the Import Ban of '89!  :o

That old school SODA racing was awesome. :headbang:

I can't say I know that much about Walker Evans but I was surprised to see him in a Jeep. That was an amazing ending when he won being pushed sideways across the finish line.  That was a dirty end to the race.  Must have been a bitter rivalry.
Title: Re: YouTube surfing
Post by: 80W150 on January 29, 2014, 03:31:42 PM
My ex bro in law and I used to go to SODA races here in Michigan when they held them not far from where we lived. Weekend long gig. It was great. But, sadly enough, they quit holding them in the lower peninsula.  :crybaby2: We had it one time though, went back to the pit area and got to talk to Walker Evans for a little bit. When he found out I had my 86 RC there he wanted to go see it. I was more than happy to oblige. He gave it a thumbs up. (this was back in 93 or so, I had only had the truck not even a year and it came from Texas so it was really clean) He's a very nice, genuine person to talk with. You knew he was busy and had lots to do but he seemed to always take time for his fans and didn't just sign something then brush you off. He'd talk as long as there was time. Still have the hat I bought and he signed. (and he had a 91 or so RC there painted in the team colors)

Yeah, Walker and Robby Gordon had a little thing going for a while. (more on Gordons part than Walkers) Robby was way young and would get torqued cuz Walker was older and could still out drive him. (at least that's my view on it) Robby was kind of a schmuck for driving like he did but, off road is a very aggressive race whether it's stadium, short course or desert...

Walker isn't racing desert or anything anymore BUT, he is doing rock crawling. He hasn't given up driving. Just slower and more technical now.  :steeringwheel:

Once dodge dropped the off road racing program I quit watching it on TV. Nobody to root for then.

Offroading in Ukraine.  These guys wheel for a week through some serious shit.  Chainsawing through trees, tree limbs sticking out of the tires, riding off the sides to counter balance the vehicles.  Awesome stuff but cant understand a word they say as they laugh their way along some treacherous terrain.  Good stuff.

Ok - who's ready for this potboiler?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xBH25XxM-7g

From the trailer alone, I'm pretty sure this is gonna make "Twister" look like "Masterpiece Theater."     Like, "Sharknado," but without the humor.

I'm a storm chaser, so I'm GONNA be there, but you better believe I'm packin' Nachos, hotdogs, TWO large Cokes, and the endless Tub o' Buttered for this piece of cinematic cheese.  I'm goin' for the CGI and the Dolby Surround Sound - I expect a 2 hour bowl of noise, and I'm pretty sure that's what I'm gonna get!
Title: Re: YouTube surfing
Post by: workgoats on June 30, 2014, 05:45:14 PM
I know several of the people in Twister.  I spent a lot of time working storm claims in Oklahoma as an adjuster or a contractor estimator.  I even used to house "Spike the Wonder Pig", mascot of TV-9 in Oklahoma City (owned by the weatherman on Twister).

I'm tasked now to lead on our company tornado response plan.  Only a couple of our people besides myself have ever seen a tornado.

Maybe I should show them the trailer...
