Title: Its frickin' cold today! Anybody working on their truck?
Post by: SixGun on January 09, 2015, 05:23:47 PM
:coffee2:  Definitely a hot coffee day (or hot chocolate for you ladies  :laughing7:).  What are you guys working on or doing in this cold weather?  No garage space, so Im just watching the tube bundled up.  Learning about France's terror problems. Tomorrow is supposed to be worse.  :disgust:

I've been battling 40 Degree Temperatures, 35 MPH Winds, and 10-20 Ft Swells. Needless to say I don;t have sea legs at all. I've been Green in the Face for a week but luckly have not had to praise the Porcelain God. The rig is all over the place and just wont stop moving. Poor career choice for some one that gets motion sickness.

Indeed, That wind cuts right through you and the moving back and forth makes me feel like crap all the time. At least I know I don;t have a future career as a Alaskan fisherman .

I have a ruler hanging in front of my desk on the wall and it just moves back and forth like a pendulum .........  :puke:

Okay, so I bought another Grand Cherokee for the grand-daughter so I could get the Purple Jeep back.  Bought a 97 Grand Cherokee from the Fort Worth Police impound auction for $425.  It's 2 wheel drive and had to have a battery and a muffler.  I've also got to fix the glove compartment.  It was broken in the police search.

All that prefaces the need to weld a muffler on when I don't even have room to get it into the garage...  (In this weather...)

Good Score, What all do you have to do to buy these police impounds Ron? Seem like great deals, I still wish I was on land to buy that Police Command unit you sent me months ago.

I haven't had coveralls in years.  Had a couple pairs of military coveralls that were stolen years ago in an apartment laundry mat.  Anyone know a good source for coveralls that wont cost an arm and a leg. I don't want to ruin a good coat working on the truck in this weather.

After checking online, I went to Tractor Supply and Academy but only bibs without lining left.  I even checked out the hunting gear but nothing is even on clearance yet.   :(

I would look at www.Amazon.com, they have everything and normally cheaper prices then walmart ,academy, and tsc.

Good Score, What all do you have to do to buy these police impounds Ron? Seem like great deals, I still wish I was on land to buy that Police Command unit you sent me months ago.

Bidding is done on line.  Most of the items can be inspected but the Fort Worth impounds may not be available.  Some of the sellers will tell you if they run and drive.  Most will tell you if they have a key.  I think it is really risky to bid without seeing the vehicle but both of the Jeeps I bought were sight unseen.

Anyway, if you win the bid, you can pay on line with a credit or debit card.  The auction office is in Fort Worth.  After you pay (credit card takes about 3% additional) they send you a receipt by e-mail and then you can schedule to pick up whatever you have bought.  Each item has the rules about pickup printed on the item info.

The purple Jeep was abandoned on private party.  It was sold for storage charges.  The seller did all the paperwork.  Most counties it is a quick trip to a clean title.  Brazos County was a little strange but it got done.

The police impound came with forms filled out, including an application for title already filled out in my name.  That Jeep had a lien on it but the police paperwork says it is mine, free and clear.

I haven't bought any vehicles from the state yet, but that should be a standard title transfer.

Some have asked how I get by in purchasing these without some kind of license.  As best I can tell, the vehicles in this auction are without insurance claim.  They are abandoned, confiscated or sold outright without any insurance claim.

They sell a lot of 4x4 pickups from various state agencies.  I think any of those would require inspection.  Condition would certainly vary by driver or drivers.

I worked on the dakota trying to get it running right to move it on down the road. Found a leak (won't say the only one) on the intake manifold gasket because of a bolt that would not run all the way down. Got a Tap for it and cleared it and its all good. It runs better till 3k then still falls on its face. I need new plugs for it then we are going to test it all again.

Today... well today was a different story as to what I did, go look in projects.

I have to find time to research why 4H is not working for me. Hopefully its an easy fix, I don't care to rebuild a tcase

This will be the last post here on the auction purchases.  I took the paper from Fort Worth police to the tax office I walked out with tags.  Total cost on the 97 Jeep was $151.  It took a while because I always get a clerk in training but biggest thing was it worked.

One of the last questions she asked the boss was, "It has a lien.  What about it?"

Apparently on a police impound the lien holder is out of luck.

My 2012 Toyota threw a check engine light a few days ago. When I came home, it was off and seemed to run fine.  I tried to get the code checked at O'Reillys but they got nothing.  Said that manufacturers are changing codes so you have to go to stealership. Code came up again this morning.  Took it in and its $117 to hook up machine and check codes.  What a ripoff.  Maybe its too much to ask to stand behind your product.  What a concept.   :angry4:

Well just my car back.  They think its a coil pack for #4 cylinder but it didn't throw a code again.  Swapped coil pack to another cylinder and sent me home with no charge.  They made a note of what cylinder they swapped it to if / when it throws a code again.  He went ahead and ordered the coil pack in preparation of it. He was pretty sure that's the culprit.

Ok, me happy for now. As long as I don't get stranded somewhere.

lol sounds like you need to driver your truck more and maybe the Toyota might get jealous and start running better :laughing7:.

would the coil pack be covered under warranty since the car is so new? i know up here most vehicle usually have a 5 year warranty that i think would cover that since it is not a normal wear and tear part.
Title: Re: Its frickin' cold today! Anybody working on their truck?
Post by: SixGun on January 19, 2015, 12:02:50 PM
I believe its a 2 year warranty. On new cars, I never get the extended since its rarely covers what breaks down and I've always read that its a ripoff.  Usually anything major will come to light fairly quick on new cars. This is my second Toyota and so far so good. My big complaint is brake squeal.  They tell me I'm too hard on the brakes.  My retort was that none of my other vehicles ever did that. Creature comforts and gas mileage though are no problem.
Title: Re: Its frickin' cold today! Anybody working on their truck?

sounds like you guys get ripped off down there. i am pretty sure most cars up here come with a 5 year 100,000km warranty since most things should not go bad in that period of time. my aunt bought a used car from a dealer and she had a wheel bearing on it go bad on it when it was 4 years old. warranty covered it. i think they even replaced the wheel bearing on the other side for some reason

Lots of "American" manufacturers use that gimmick. "Japanese" manufacturers generally have stricter quality controls.  I had a 1988 Honda that had nearly 300,000 miles on it and still going strong when I parted ways with it. Also the best mpg at 40 on the highway. That car had manual windows and locks. I don't think new vehicles would last years like our old Dodges.  Not with all the electronic BS on them.  Nowadays I keep them 3 years and trade them in.

What? my 2003 durango is still going strong at 205k miles. Had to replace a few things on it but nothing too bad (minus someone over heating it and blowing both head gaskets).

The one thing I can't figure out is why it likes to eat upper ball joint boots?  :dontknow:

They are cheap and easy to replace so I just keep doing that.

Haven't done anything with my Dodge yet. Still sitting at the storage lot. Last week had the rear drum brakes changed on the Cherokee and had to replace one wheel cylinder under warranty. I bought a Firestone lifetime rear brake package about 4 years ago when i got the XJ from dad. Iv'e done drum's myself in the past and i just think there a pain in the ass at this point in my life..lol My big score is i've been searching for conversion part's for the XJ and finally found what i been looking for. Small shop in Pearland has some parted vehicles in back. They pulled the engine out of a 99 4x4 XJ recently. I bought the already pulled 4wd shifter, AW-4 tranny, transfer case, driveshafts everthing still mounted together for $450. Noticed that year XJ was the last year of the front HP Dana 30. Offered him a $100 for that which he accepted. I've seen them at salvage yard's in the weaker low pinion version for $300 so i think i scored a good deal. They also have a 2001 Grand Cherokee 4x4. I'm grabbing the knuckles off of that to do the big brake conversion on my XJ. It will allow my XJ to have cross over steering and one inch bigger rotors and dual piston caliber's in the front. Let me know if ya need anything off that GC Ron. I think it's the same as your 99. I'm not sure what engine is in it though.

I have a 94 4x4 ZJ and a 97 2x4 ZJ if we can get the 97 running it will go to the grand daughter and i'll get the 4x back.  It's having some fuel issues, including a couple of injectors not injecting...

I've just about narrowed it down to a wiring issue on the injectors.  Ernest is supposed to be bringing his scan tool over this weekend to see if we can figure out why I have to pull the gas tank.

And, the fuel pump died on the 88 Cherokee this morning.  It had been making noise.  Good news:  Don't have to drop the tank to change it.  Bad news: can't change if the tank is over half full.

Price of gas...tank is full.

ya the hole has got pretty big pretty quick. only a couple months ago the hole was the side of a finger and now all my fingers would fit in the hole easily. this also explain why the exhaust rattles when at higher rpm's. i have been wanting to do the exhaust for a while but i need to measure and  figure out exactly what i need. i have had nothing but bad luck with the exhaust on this thing. the shop that the previous owner had the exhaust work done at completely messed things up big time which is what has made so much work for me. if only that had just rotated the tail pipe so that it didn't come in contact with the shock all would have been good.

it was 10*F out today and felt a lot colder with the wind. since the engine in the ramcharger cut out 3 time today and i got to work tomorrow i had to brave the cold and fix it. i lucked out that it was just a bad connection where i splice in a fusible link. i don't understand how the connection got so bad in less than 6 months but it some how did. the engine seems to be running better since.

The wife and I took a little road trip today and ended up surprising Noah and Eric.
They were just buttoning up Eric's RC after replacing the clutch. I was able to go on a trial run through the woods on a homemade offroad course. Lotta fun! Rides like a Sherman tank.  That thing hit 3 grand at like 5 mph.

i like wiring. i just hate doing it in the cold :laughing7:. my 81 would be a electrical nightmare for a most but it is pretty rock solid reliable electrically. truck always starts even at -20. she is extremely miserable at -20 but she starts. i still got some electrical upgrades to do to it to make it more reliable and efficient but haven't got around to it yet. the ramcharger has been sucking up so much of my repair time and budget.

Since electrical is not yet my forte the first thing I did was copied my wiring diagram and sharpened my colored pencils and traced every line so I had a lay of the land. Then I bought a new roll of electric tape and a silver sharpie and labelled all the wires starting with the dash. I now know my wiring like the back of my hand including all the changes made by previous owners (not impressed). Then I read all the threads here and printed the mad electrical instructions. I'm good to go if it will stop raining for a minute. The only thing hanging me up is that specs call for a 6ga wire (not easy to find but i did), but everything I'm reading calls for 10ga. I think I'm gonna go with 6 for the bypass and to replace what cprispfied from the firewall to the ammeter which I will now replace with a voltmeter. Come on California sunshine, I need my truck running in case the river floods. In the meantime I'm stomping puddles in my baja.

In the meantime I'm stomping puddles in my baja.

you could have used wire that was heavier than 6 gauge as long as you fuse it correctly. i would recommend just  running the alternator output straight to the battery and then just run a new wire from the battery into the cab. you could then probably use like a 10 gauge with a 14gauge fusible link from the battery to the voltage gauge in the cab where it could join the rest of the electrical system.

i would also advise that for any wiring you do under the hood you pick up some dual wall heat shrink tubing. the stuff works good for sealing up wires and protecting connections from weather and water.

 :sunny:  off for 2 days

Beautiful 80* and it would l be nice to get Carter wrapped up but nooooo.
My daughter in laws truck broke down literally in front of our house. She pulled in to drop my wife off and snap, it fell over to one side with a broken (snapped completely off) ball joint. Better here than on the freeway. We try to get the tire off that somebody torqued the shit out of and stripped the head of one lug nut. Spent a couple hours trying to cut it off with my new dremel tool from Christmas.   Decided after dark to reload with more cutting wheels and a bigger cold chisel.

My beautiful day off just turned into work on someone else's vehicle.  :crybaby2: :crybaby2:

Bummer! That's defiantly no way to spend a day off. but at least you were there to help save her.

I hate Ball joints, I remember doing them on my Chevy with Noah at his parents house. All I remember is swinging a 8 Pound Sledge hammer for ever! Defiantly sucks to do with or with out the right tools.

I've rebuilt 3 front ends within the last 3 years.  Gets a little easier with more experience and the right tools.  This one is a 94 Chevy C1500. I finally was able to drill and grind the lug nut and stud out. The lower pass side snapped but the uppers have torn grease caps. They must be factory since they have no grease zerks. Might as well change those too. Uppers are held in with 4 bolts. Looks easy enough. The lowers are pressed. Good thing I have a ball joint press.  The sway bar rubber is literally falling off, cracking and you can see daylight between the bar and rubber. The adjusting sleeve for the tie rods on the pass side must have hit when it snapped.  It is bent like a banana. I'm already calculating how many margaritas this will cost her.

Noah and I's friend Jake ( you met him at the shop) Has a 96-98 Gmc 1500 that he replaced ball joints a few times on. the last one literally fell out at a stop sign. The hole truck just fell over when he came to a stop. He ended up having to buy a new lower A arm I think. Im pretty sure it was the lower. Ask noah I think he helped jake out on those. he might Know a trick or two.

almost sounds like you need to finish Carter so that your daughter can have a nice reliable dodge to drive

Eric, that's a crazy story. Basically the same thing, she was pulling in and stopped in front of the house and the truck just fell over.  Its funny that you mentioned the control arm because they sell them as a kit with complete arm, bushings, and ball joints at every place I checked. Must be a common problem.

Mat, as for Carter, I could never hand him over to someone that never does maintenance on their own vehicle. I just rescued this one so there is no way I'd throw it back into the junk pile.  Besides the DIL is a, ewww, Chevy girl. She has 2 of them falling apart. The other one is an S10.

oh. your DIL is one of those types of people. drive the vehicle till the wheels fall off before you fix anything lol. those type of people are becoming a lot more common. i swear it should be mandatory to take and pass at least 1 auto shop class in high school so people like that would not be as common.

In this case, a tire (wheel) literally came off.   :violent1:

We have have annual inspections here for roadworthiness.  Hers is way overdue. All 4 tires are bald bald double-bald. Labor I can do but she's gonna have to buy her own tires.  :nono:

lol. if we had annual inspections up here so many vehicles would be pulled off the road.

Well I found out why they sell the whole control arm assembly.  Those are not 4 bolts holding that upper ball joint in. After cleaning off all the crud with a wire wheel, I discovered that they are 4 rivits.  What a pita that was.  I'm off to the store to pick up a large Allen wrench to remove the brake caliper. Damn Chevys! :disgust:

Yeah, I think Jake replaced the Ball Joints on his GMC 3-4 times. I can;t remember.

My 03 durango is like that, it goes through upper ball joints like candy.

Granted now that the factory rivet set ball joints are gone its easy to swap out.... but still

And yes next time I have to do a set of factory... I will be buying the control arm and all. Much easier

I'm glad I decided to do both uppers and lowers on both sides. They were all loose and floppy. It was just a matter of time. Cutting the rivets off the other side was a piece of cake since I knew what worked by then. I really need to get a pickle fork attachment for the air hammer. That was the worst, beating on that thing with a bfh. Tomorrow should be fairly easy. Sway bar and lube. Hopefully I won't find anything else.

yeah I hate rivets lol

I am hoping to make some progress on the cummins today. Plan is to remove all the torque converter bolts when I get home and try to push it back to look at the flex plate.

I might start it up after that and see what it does with the transmission disconnected.

Bad thing is I still don't have a title for it yet. Slow process  :dontknow:

i know it was cold. i lucked out. my ramcharger was slow turning over but fired up pretty much immediately. it did act a bit funny but seemed to straighten out after a bit. voltage gauge would drop every time i stepped on the gas but start charging once i took my foot off the gas. didn't make sense but seemed fine on the way to work.
