Title: cooking on a smoker???
Post by: taz_man440 on June 14, 2015, 11:17:25 PM
ok guys,  Saved a small smoker from the scrap heap. Only missing the grill racks. the firebox is very small but I have cut some of my oak firewood to the best size to fit & work.  Now here is my question... is it even worth trying to smoke maybe some fish or steaks on this thing or am I wasting my time?  I have a gas grill that we love cooking steaks, pork chops, ect on but just wanted to try something different.  Was gonna try my luck at smoking some Tilapia on some cedar planks if you guys don't think i'm wasting my time...

I have made a small fire in the smoker just to see what kind of heat it gets.. got it to 250* easily, then played with keeping at 200* just to see if I could.  Had a good amount of smoke to it so guess I was fairly close on operations...

Here is a link to the smoker I picked up.

I cook fish and steak and all sorts of stuff on my smoker, but its not the same type as yours.

I think it would still be good, just takes some time to do.

Read up on how to do Smoked chicken... that is some good stuff too  :13:

This weekend I did some testing. had the propane grill ready as a backup just in case...  Wrapped a pork tenderloin in bacon ( after covering it in seasoning) & smoked it about 2.5 hrs @ 200-225.  turned out really well. Also smoked some pork chops which also turned out good.  now I have the fever for a real smoker. Need to come across some pipe & make my own...lol
