Title: Carb on a Magnum engine?
Post by: workgoats on October 29, 2012, 08:37:03 PM
Nick has decided that he would rather put a carb on his 96 360 magnum engine than deal with the megasquirt computer.   The engine is now in a 82 RC.  He originally wanted to pull a trailer but I think he now just wants a running truck.

The way I understand it, the LA intake will not bolt to the magnum heads.  Is there some approach to this, other than replacing the heads?

We have ignition modules, coils, distributor and all the other stuff we would need to make it work.  We also have an Edlebrock manifold and a Holley 4 bbl that would probably be big enough for the 360.

Can the aluminum manifold for the LA (318) be modified to fit the magnum heads?  Is there a possibility of putting the 4 bbl on the magnum intake in place of the throttle body and plugging the injectors?

I suspect this has been discussed but I have no internet at home and have not had the time to do much research yet.

I know the fuel pump might be a problem but we have an older gas tank that we can use and install an in-line electric pump rated for the carb.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Nick might be interested in some sort of trade too, but be advised that the engine has been set up for batch feed, instead of sequential feed on the injectors.  It would have to have a new harness or be rewired to go with a factory computer.

ya. you need a the proper intake for the job. maybe you could find one on your local Craigs list. i know i saw one not too long ago for $100 but i never had a use for it.
you need something like this

Thats it. It fits both LA and magnum and performs pretty good to.

I thought I saw an Edelbrock intake offered for a magnum engine that a carb would sit on.

The manifold bolts on a Magnum are vertical into the heads rather than at the 'V' angle of the heads ie. deck. There are manifolds with dual patterns. Drilling might be tough, there might not be 'Boss' material trying to modify an 'LA' manifold. Also watch for alternator and AC mounting in relationship to the thermostat housing, as most that work on RC's are offset to the drivers side of the motor, not the center. You need the offset for the AC to fit. Also the port matching might be important.

I talked to Nick about the RC the other day.  He works 7 days on, 7 days off and is planning on doing some shopping soon.
